Illegal immigrants are making out at tax time -- thanks to the rest of us U.S. taxpayers. DeeDee Correll writes in the LATimes:
Of 5,000 returns they examined, they found 1,300 that had both taxpayer identification numbers and Social Security numbers, raising suspicions that the Social Security numbers were falsified or stolen.Stolen numbers can cause a variety of problems for their rightful owners, such as damaging their credit or drawing the attention of IRS auditors.
So far, authorities have arrested 28 people. Those believed to have used stolen numbers are charged with identity theft, while those suspected of creating fictitious numbers are charged with criminal impersonation. Officials said they don't yet know how many of the 1,300 names will fall into each category because verifying Social Security numbers is a slow process.
Weld officials say the average return they analyzed showed a worker paying $800 in taxes, claiming many exemptions and a child tax credit, and receiving a refund of more than $2,000.
Cooke and Buck suggest the refunds are inappropriate. They acknowledge they have no jurisdiction over such issues but said they wanted to emphasize the costs to government. "As a taxpayer, I have the right to know what this scam is costing -- a scam perpetrated by the IRS and tax preparers," Cooke said.

The tax prep lady is a flaming idiot. They are not being deported cause they went to her for tax prep but because they are illegal. Oh boo hoo these families are being broken up, well then don't come here illegally. I have no idea why this is such a hard concept to grasp.
I love the Latino community outrage. This is absolutely hilarious. There will emerge from this two Latino communities. The one taking the false names and the ones who ID was stolen. You don't think they buy "John Smith" if they just hopped the fence from Mexico.
I would like to point out that there are shit loads of native born Americans doing the same thing, being a filthy legal immigrant couldn't help my self. Change the child tax credit to a tax refund and most of this would disappear. It's one thing for the poor not to pay taxes it's quite different when they get free money. This is encouraging them to have huge families since they get a huge bonus check from the feds.

First of all, the Fed. Income tax is completely unconstitutional. It's unapportioned, the number of states required to ratify the ammendment never happened, and there is no law or statute in place that says you have to pay, although the government fraudulently claims you have to. All the money from income tax pretty much goes back into the pockets of the Big Dicks behind the federal reserve bank, which is about as federal as Federal Express. You should be more pissed off that the Big Dicks get the money at all....they're the ones who will be behind the destruction of the constitution and the U.S. as we know it anyway.

Please note that all of KG's arguments re: the "unconstitutional" income tax are frivolous, have been repeatedly debunked over the years, and will eventually cost you some serious tax penalties if you are foolish enough to rely on them.

one underlying issue: you have to have cajones of solid brass, to not only use froged documents, but then to call attention to yourself by asking for money from the government whose documents you forged... this isn't a person who only got docs as a minimum to work, and then walks small hoping not to get caught. These are people who feel entitled to anything they can get, and then will curse the system when they get caught for sending them back to Mexico. The tax prep lady is correct in that she has done what was asked of her to verify the people for the government tax returns. Unsaid is that everyone went to her precisely because she could get them money for nothing by knowing the system.
The Latino community should be championing getting immigration measures in place, and turning in cheats, because they lose legitimacy when everyone wonders if they are actually citizens or not.

The current tax rebate laws create a great moral hazard, the opportunity to cheat. It will get much worse under the expanded rebates proposed by Obama.
The government has little desire to track these people down. I believe this is an intended "loophole" to distribute money to gain political favor.
Some people will lie about eligibility, just as they currently lie about extra dependents to get current tax deductions. The temptation to lie is greater, because they can walk away with a check, not just a reduction in the tax owed. There is an incentive to file under a false social security number, get the check, and disappear.
Taxes will be made more horribly complicated. Obama proposes phase-outs and rate changes along with the cuts. The cut you get this year may be reclaimed in following years by inflation and any increasing family income.

Do people really claim kids they don't have? How? Kids get socials the day they're born, practically, nowadays. I guess I"m a wuss, or moral-that sounds better so I'll go with that one-because I could never try that. The IRS can make you want to end your life, if they take a fancy to try. I would never want to tempt them.

I think that I need to run for office in the future. Some of the issues I would work on would be:
revise the laws regarding information sharing between government agencies.
A social security number database matching names and social security numbers. If anyone is caught using a stolen number, it would be addressed immediately.
I would eliminate this tax code, replace it with a national sales tax, high enough to replace the revenue the government is receiving now. It would exclude items such as food, medications etc. I would also eliminate these farm subsidies, home mortgage interest deductions, child tax credits and all these other stupid deductions. A national sales tax will encourage saving money eliminating this debt economy we have. It will also eliminate the tax cheats that are so prevelent in this country. By eliminating these farm subsidies, it will stop the waste of tax payer money that is going to Ted Turner and others such as corporate farms as well as paying farmers not to farm their land.
I would lower both the estate tax and capital gains tax to encourage economic growth.
Lower U.S.corporate taxes rates to bring companies back to the U.S. which will actually increase tax revenue. U.S. corporate tax rates are among the highest in the world.
Increase the leases for companies that drill for oil in the US.
Limit the free trade that are taking American jobs overseas.
In certain cases bring back tarriffs or limits on imports. Having foreign companies bring jobs here, i.e BMW, Toyota auto plants in US.
Copy what Japan did after WW II making imports into the US go thru US manufacturing companies. I.E. imported steel must go thru a US company such as Bethlehem Steel.
I would also tighten the border with Mexico, I would consider a guest worker program on a limited basis.
I would make it very difficult for citizens from Muslims countries to enter the U.S.in order to keep the population low, why? See Great Britain and France.
I would eliminate the law where a child born in the U.S. to an illegal immigrant would NOT be given U.S. citizenship.
A child would have to be a U.S. citizen or LEGAL alien to attend a U.S. public school or university and an illegal alien would NOT be given grants loans or in-state tuition.
I would encourage a national education curriculum, consolidation of school districts to eliminate overhead and redundancy in administration. Higher teacher pay, forgiveness of student loans for teachers meeting certain criteria. Eliminating incompetent teachers and rewarding good teachers.
I would also reverse probably 90-100% of any legislation that passes during Obama's term in office.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that law about the citizenship is the 14th amendment. Originally meant to ensure that freed slaves were not denied the rights of citizens, it is now the basis of the anchor child. Nice, really nice.

Yes, the intent of the law is now being mis-used to create "anchor babies" and should be ammended to prohibit ILLEGAL individuals to establish the right to remain in the U.S. BY ADDING 3 WORDS, IT TAKES AWAY ANCHOR BABIES "RIGHTS" (and their ILLEGAL parents) from remaining in the U.S.
Section 1. All persons born OF U.S. CITIZENS or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.

Then let's amend it! It's dragging the US down. Here on the east side of austin, schools actually teach in spanish. And have their signs in spanish. And their sent-home papers in spanish. If you're poor and white, you're screwed. One of many reasons my kids go private.
Wanna bet how many of those kids parents are here legally? Or hey, fine, give the kids citizenship. Then deport the parents. If the kid has legal family here, they can raise them. If not, they can go into the foster system or go to mexico with the fam. That'd cut down on the anchor baby birthrate quite a bit, very quickly. And, consequently, lower the stress on our ERs providing medical care to them all.
