Amy On Ask Dr. Helen TV
Dr. Helen, who I agree with on a whole lot of issues, interviewed me a couple weeks ago. I look a little tired (they shot it the morning after my deadline days), and I was a little rusty on remembering to look at the camera instead of into space or the monitor, but I hope you'll enjoy it. Here's the link.

Interesting and enjoyable. I wish I'd heard what you said about 20 years ago. I would have understood a few instances in my life a lot better.
I'm not too fond of the combination age brings - some wisdom, much decrepitude.

Interesting interview, although I agree with some of your points regarding porn, there's more to porn than meets the eye. Men using porn for instant self (and selfish) gratification vs. taking time to have even a quickie with their wives is becoming a real big problem now-a-days. I don't think you should dismiss seemingly all women (although I could be wrong on that) who complain about porn because it could be that their husband has become an porn "addict". And talk about becoming resentful, first a woman starts out feeling unsure, to feeling unwanted, de-womanized/de-feminzed, to very insecure, and so on. Please note that I'm generally referring to what should be otherwise normal couples who would be having normal sex but porn becomes a monster that divides, confuses, alienates and can ruin what could have been a decent marriage. (And also, the women are not nags, hags, or whatever that would drive the men to porn!) Thanks for all.

Per one of the most respected conservative voices in America today, Amy Alkon is now officially a "hot chick".

I think you are a natural for your own television show Amy. You discuss things that most wouldn't touch, which makes you so interesting. Who else can jump from feminism to Hamas to the importance of fellatio? After your next book comes out and you're on the circuit it would be great to see you develop that.
PS- You looked great!
PPS- I'd love to see you bitch slap Ann Coulter.
Eric at January 22, 2009 8:57 AM
Aww, thanks. Hard for me to look at myself on TV!
Amy Alkon at January 22, 2009 9:19 AM
By golly...you ARE from Michigan!
Great piece - really enjoyed. And you look fantastic :-)
Gretchen at January 22, 2009 10:00 AM
I concur with all of the above - you looked great, you sounded great, you made great points. Here's to your greatness! *raises glass of pinot noir* (yeah I know, but the sun's over the yard arm somewhere) I think you could be well on your way to an even broader scope of notoriety. And in your case, that's a good thing! o.O
Flynne at January 22, 2009 10:06 AM
I thought you showed tons of edgy charm.
(I don't know why I feel a bit grudging! Whatever. Agree with Eric and Gretchen too - you also look great.)

Not only I fully support all the comments posted above, but I am also stunned by the sound of your voice. I never expected to sound so nice! Have you ever thought about radio work or podcasting? You could do a killing if you jump into these fields.

I just did an appearance on a radio show that I'll post tomorrow, I think. And I'm doing another next Wednesday -- a guy whose show I really liked when he was on the air in L.A., who's now doing an Internet show.

Wonderful interview. You were well poised, well coiffed, dressed impeccably (I love that outfit!), and you spoke eloquently. You should have your own TV show, radio show, and pod cast. Much better than Dr. Phil (BOO!) and those other daytime hacks.
Truth at January 22, 2009 12:48 PM
Couldn't watch it earlier. I'm in total agreement with all the praise, I think you came off as very personable. Bit of a low Blow with poking at his name, that's just mean;)
Hasan at January 22, 2009 1:08 PM
Most interesting to see you in the flesh, as it were ... unfortunately a low download speed meant lots of pauses. I think that show would have been very informative and helpful to a lot of people.
If you're interested in radio, I'd second Toubrouk's suggestion to investigate podcasts. You could do a few speculatively, explaining some topic, and post them on your website for free download. Give them a comment facility so people can give you explicit feedback, and see how it goes.
Lastly - where in the world does Dr Helen's accent come from? I've got to go there.

With newspapers failing right and left I need to do stuff for pay now, unfortunately, but my show, which we've been working hard on (and is with a great company) is the best possibility right now. I'd love to do radio, too! I don't have an agent for this stuff - but a friend's agent met me and liked me...encouraged by your response...will do more and see what I can do with it.

Hi Amy,
Thanks again for doing the show. And BTW, I am from Knoxville, Tennessee -- that is where the accent comes from. I agree with the rest of your commenters that you are made for TV or radio and would do well in either arena. Let Glenn and me know if you do a TV web show so we can link it and watch it ourselves!

You can add me to the chorus. I thought Amy was excellent on video. Not pretty good. Excellent.
I'd watch a show of hers.

Second Gretchen's comment above -- Yep, that's a Midwestern gal! Especially contrasted with Dr. Helen "Knoxville" Smith! Lovely job, well done, Amy Alkon!
By the way, I always thought your last name was pronounced AL-kon (rhymes with Balkan, sort of). Dr. Smith pronounced it a little differently, though.

Hi Amy,
In print and in video, you come across as intelligent, down to earth, and genuine.
The video also showed your joy of life, playfulness, and a positive energy (sorry, don't know how else to describe it). You can sometimes come across as a bit of a hardass in writing (truly, no offense; I like that about you!), but it belies your charm "in person"!

Monica at January 23, 2009 7:07 AM
Again Amy was excellent in that video but I took note of the picture of her first book. I looked it up on Amazon and here is how it's described:
"Three sassy, single women who dispense free advice on the streets of New York City offer words of wisdom ..."
Now, who the hell do those "3 sassy women" think they are? They're not "authors"!!! Someone please contact Joe The Plumber immediately and offer him Amy's apology.
sean at January 23, 2009 8:03 AM
So is Joes book about plumbing?
Douchebag
lujlp at January 23, 2009 10:04 AM
Lujlp,
Thanks for the kind word. I can see that change really has come to America. A new era of civility.
If I recall Amy's elitist bitching and whining about Joe being an "author" (How dare he!!!) it had nothing to do with the subject he was writing about. You see writing is hard. Only "writers" can do it.
This is not a simple concept so I don't expect you to understand the nuance. Maybe you could ask your plumber to explain it to you.

Joe apparently didn't write/isn't writing his book. Note the "with Thomas N. Tabback" on the cover. Tabback is an actual writer.
Writing IS terribly hard -- that is, if you're doing more than just typing. Elmore Leonard says you have to write a million words before you hit your stride as a writer. From experience, I can tell you he's right.

sean you are a douchebag.
First of all Amy is a writer, perhaps you recall she WRITES an advice collum?
So we have an advice collum writter writting an advice book.
And then we have a plumber slapping his name on a book that someone else will write.
By the way has anyone figured out what the book is about yet?
So your offended that someone who writes for a living is miffed that some idiot gets paid for something he didnt work for while claiming he can do her job even thugh he didnt?
My self, I reserve my offense for things that are truly offensive.
But then I'm not a douchebag. Douchebag.
lujlp at January 23, 2009 1:37 PM
Couldn't get a hold of that plumber, eh lujlp? weekends are tough. Try him on monday.
Reading your posts or rather trying to decipher your posts, I can see where "writting" and writers, especially writers who "writte" "collum"'s would be a touchy subject for you.
Those sentences you tried to write were complicated. Don't get discouraged.
But you got the word Douchebag correct. Good for you.
