What a maroon. I wonder if Wesley Snipes has an opinion on this matter?

A friend just wrote me about this video: "Incredible that these people have their constituents bamboozled."
My response:
Incredible that the guy passed high school government class -- if, indeed, he did.

Open mouth, insert foot.
I wonder what he thinks the job of the IRS is; Walking door-to-door and soliciting donations?
Toubrouk at February 6, 2009 3:20 PM
Actually, it is voluntary, according to the law.
It's just that there are certain, shall we say, incentives to get you to volunteer.
Like jail time and asset forfeiture.
Completely voluntary!
brian at February 6, 2009 3:26 PM
It's like the draft. They couldn't hold your arm up and make you swear that oath. They just put you in prison if you didn't.
Like the moron said, voluntary.
MarkD at February 6, 2009 4:43 PM
If only the topic of not paying taxes had been in the news recently.
And Harry Reid's a lawyer, folks!
So, according to Reid, the fact that we file returns and can take deductions means the system is voluntary.
Try driving down a toll road and not volunteering to pay the toll. Try going to the store and not volunteering to pay the sales tax.

This does explain Geithner, Daschle, and the rest....
jerry at February 6, 2009 8:36 PM
Wow. What an idiot. And I'm someone who is relatively "pro-taxes." And it's such a stupid argument. We can discuss all day how much taxes there should be, there are valid reasons on both sides, but taxes are almost by definition involuntary, otherwise they'd be donations. If they were voluntary, even at the lowest, most conservative level, a siginifcant perscentage of people would not pay.
Clinky at February 6, 2009 8:42 PM
Total asshole.
Eric at February 6, 2009 8:48 PM
You guys are missing the point. It's all one big PR scam. The IRS says we have "the highest voluntary compliance rate" in the world, or some such shit. The law certainly makes it seem optional. What's not optional under the law is filing a tax return, and once you've done that, then it's not optional any more.
It's all highly theoretical.
But Harry Reid's still a cockholster.
brian at February 6, 2009 8:52 PM
Like that word, Brian.
And actually, I thought he was suggesting it's okay to cheat in the middle of his little chat. About as dumb as what he said was agreeing to chat with Helfeld.
Again, this man is the SENATE MAJORITY LEADER.
The more I know about the people in charge, the more horrified/terrified/appalled I am.
Amy Alkon at February 6, 2009 11:19 PM
Thank Ace over at ace.mu.nu for cockholster.
And now you know why I and so many others tried to impress upon you why it was so damned important that Barack Obama lose.
It was never about Obama. It was about giving Pelosi and Reid carte blanche to enact every Democratic/socialist wet dream that's been on hold for the last thirty years.
And now you also know why I keep saying...
We are so fucked.
brian at February 7, 2009 4:16 AM
Reid was saying is you can, through actions such as donations or buying a home or other choices, adjust the amount of money you pay on taxes.
Yeah, it was idiotic, obviously taxes aren't "voluntary", but the interviewer was being equally idiotic by pretending not to know what he meant.

Actually, come to think about it, I like the idea of a voluntary system. It would never happen in a million years.
By voluntary, I mean that you would still have to pay taxes, but would get to choose how the money was spent. So if you didn't want to support welfare moms, your money could go to education or something.
Budgets would be decided by direct democracy, by people!
I would spend mine on education, on roads because the roads and bridges in America are a fucking joke (we look like a third world country), on subsidizing public transportation, on cleaning up the environment, on security inside our borders, and on benefits for vets.
I wouldn't spend money on salaries of CEOs who ran their companies into the ground.
Of course, in real life, this wouldn't be practical, and we might end up with a crazy situation in which we had way too much money in one sector, and not enough in another.
NicoleK at February 7, 2009 6:12 AM
Yeah, I see what you mean Amy, in that it is what it looked like he was TRYING to do that, but I think in the end it looked like he was not even trying to let Reid explain his point. He kept interrupting him. I thought the interviewer looked rather dumb as well as Reid.
NicoleK at February 7, 2009 1:51 PM
The worst part is that it's not the stupidest thing this walking bag o'shit has said or done. Just par for the course with the current crop of Dumbocrat "leadership".
