Really, We Were
Discussing "The omission effect and the design of moral psychology" (which actually happened to be an interesting talk by Chapman U. post-doc Peter DeScioli that I went to Friday afternoon).
I'm at the Human Behavior and Evolution Society Conference. I'll blog some of the talks next week, probably. Just as soon as my friend (who happens to be a very brainy evolutionary psych prof) and I can pull ourselves out of the hot tub.
Oh, and more on how I have slut toes after the author e-mails me her paper.

Well, she does look very brainy. Must be the bikini top that does it. Or maybe the glasses.
*Sigh*

Looks like it was a heated discussion. I'd bet the participants got kinda steamed sometimes as well.

I missed the beginning of the slut toes thing! How can mine be more like yours ;)

She looks good from the waist up in a bikini, but they say she has 3½ feet, which probably looks weird in eveningwear.

I'll discuss anything she likes. I'll even pretend to understand.

She's hot, but Amy's hotter.
Jeff at May 31, 2009 12:26 AM
So I'd be curious as to what our dear evo-psych prof thinks of the reactions to her pic.
'Course brainy is incredibly hot, no matter what she is wearing...
SwissArmyD at May 31, 2009 8:39 AM
Wait. This isn't the ev phyche professor that thinks men should pay for everything, is she? She's not the one that wants ev psyche when it benefits women, but dismisses it when it doesn't benefit women (a la the slut defense), is she?
Jeff at May 31, 2009 10:11 AM
Whoa! Where'd THAT come from?
brian at May 31, 2009 10:40 AM
It's from a long previous discussion about the implications of ev phyche to dating. Amy mentioned a female ev phyche prof she questioned about the slut defense, an idea that generated some pretty lively, and at times pretty nasty, discussion. Many women really hate that part of ev psyche.
I'm reading Driscoll's "You Still Don't Understand - Typical Differences Between Men and Women." I was reminded of that long previous discussion.

Um, no...and a hint -- there are MANY female ev psych professors. And I don't personally know any that use ev psych the way you describe.
The woman pictured is a good friend of mine and somebody whose research I've quoted a number of times in my writing. I only didn't mention her name because, when somebody Googles her, I think she'd prefer her work come up, not a photo of her in the jacuzzi in a bikini.

Hmmm. So is there an ebb and flow to this "omission effect and the design of moral psychology"? Say, like, is it more pronounced during the day or night? Because I've heard of a nocturnal omission effect. Hahaha. Oh, no.

"brainy is incredibly hot"
Sotomayor=brainy
J. Kirkpatrick=brainy
Neither = hot, let alone incredibly so.
Still, brainy is a great feature when part of a package. But alone....
Spartee at May 31, 2009 4:13 PM
In Sotomayor's defense, her yearbook picture was pretty smokin'. Some people don't age well.
And Bill D. Cat had one hell of a crush on Jeanne Kirkpatrick, so at least SOMEONE thought she was hot.

In response to SwissArmyD "our evo-psych" professor is flattered and bemused. And very tired post-conference.
And Amy, you didn't miss anything Sunday. The last day of talks wasn't very inspiring. Much better stuff while you were there.
Catherine at May 31, 2009 8:10 PM
Catherine, how many feet do you have?
Crid [CommentCrid@gmail.com] at May 31, 2009 8:45 PM
Glad I didn't miss anything Sunday. I was totally wiped, boyfriend drove me home and I worked the rest of the day.
Amy Alkon at May 31, 2009 11:04 PM
How many feet? The usual pair.
