Back To The Echo Chamber!
Got this comment and another like it on my blog item above about the Times piece on my book:
I came here from the New York Times link, but now that I see that you're another of the right-wing nuts that abound lately, I'll take my leave.Posted by: Ev at November 14, 2009 10:41 PM
My response:
"I came here from the New York Times link, but now that I see that you're another of the right-wing nuts that abound lately, I'll take my leave."Actually, I'm not so easy to pigeonhole. Not a Republican, not a Democrat. No fan of Bush, no fan of Obama. Atheist. Fiscal conservative. Small "l" libertarian. "Personal responsibilitarian."
Oh, and forgot one: not popular with people who leap to conclusions about other people's politics, and who only feel comfortable in an echo chamber.
A pity you immediately turned tail. We like good debate around here. There are all stripes here in my comments section. Christians, atheists, an Orthodox Jew from Israel, men's movement guys, feminists, Democrats, Republicans, and libertarians (and Libertarians). Does debate scare you?

Ev is one of those lefties who think they're on the side of good, so anyone who disagrees with them is supporting evil. Hence they feel justified in being rude. They're actually the most illiberal and closed-minded people around.

Whatever. Don't let the door hit you in the ass on your way out.

Come to think of it, was this post even up yesterday? I was checking for new post and opening old ones this morning and I dont remember seeing this one

After gently unfastening the elastic strap that keeps her dearest musings safe from prying eyes, the little literary artiste penned another darling thought into her clothbound Moleskine notebook: "Your blog sucks", she scribed, while sipping her apricot jasmine tea..."and I shall never visit again!"
Ev is an asshat. All in favor say 'aye'.
sterling at November 15, 2009 12:19 PM
I agree with sterling, I mean who wrapes a moleskin notebook with an extra layer of cloth?

Bradley has a good point. Most "liberals" are very un-liberal. There was a great local commentary about this - can't find it only though.
The Former Banker at November 15, 2009 3:33 PM
The flip side of course is most conservatives aren't into conserving much.
NicoleK at November 15, 2009 6:48 PM
NicoleK, I agree that conservatives sometimes aren't very conservative (could they have made any bigger mistake then spending like drunken sailors the past 8 years?). But Bradley's point is an interesting take above the routine hypocrisy of partisans. Liberals walk under the banner of tolerance and accepting of all view points. Seriously, how rare is it to talk to a liberal who actually is tolerant of all/tolerant of all view points? Just seems they are tolerant of those they like or prefer. Conversely, I can talk to conservatives who really believe in their philosophy of staunch conservatism. And I say this as someone who isn't a conservative and hasn't been a registered Republican since 1990.
TW at November 15, 2009 11:33 PM
Not a single person in this world is tolerant of all viewpoints, everywhere. Some people's viewpoints just suck.
MonicaP at November 16, 2009 9:09 AM
Aye. But, Banker, if you mean by conserving much, you may have a case with the environment. Not so much else beyond the general scope of human frailty and inconsistency, for good or for ill. Saying, "they don't want to conserve our revolution" is not exactly a mark against them in the manner suggested. It may be in that they are wrong not to go with the revolution, but one can't argue that failing to do so is a failure of conservation. The revolution is the change of the status quo, not the other way round. (Of course, I'm using revolution as something of an exaggeration, but you get what I mean.)
As for the drive-by "you suck," actually, I wouldn't be surprised if EV didn't return. For a lot of people - particularly collectivists - politics is an act of revenge on society, neighbors and such who fail to appreciate that person. EV is simply acting out of spite. If he can jab and get a shot in, he's satisfied himself (herself?) for the day, and for the encounter. Actually working through the ideas is not the point, because having correct ideas is not the point. Feeling correct is, and that can be achieved cheaply, simply and with little discipline, dedication or introspection.

Can it be? Yet another blog where thoughtful discourse, whether in agreement or no, is the norm?
Discussion of topics of this nature that don't automatically devolve into the "You Suck"...."No, YOU suck" sort?
Hmmm.....perhaps I'll stick around and see if new ideas can percolate.

It's what keeps me blogging for almost free (I have a few ads on the site, but I get just a bit from them). Crid and I disagree on gay marriage, but he made me realize how damaging single parenting is...yes, actually made me change my mind some years back...he told me I was wrong, and I went and read the studies, and saw that he was right. Momof4 and lovelysoul and I also aren't exactly in lockstep on religion and a number of issues. And on and on. It's very interesting!

Oh for fuck's sake.
"The studies."
For parenthood.
