Because We've Already Got So Many Brilliant Japanese Scientists
Just what the US needs! No, not more highly-educated tech brains out of Japan. We're granting (and I can barely type it without retching) "diversity visas" to people from that bastion of peace, love and goodwill for us...Yemen!
Yes, that's right. CNSN News' Matt Cover writes:
The State Department has awarded 1,011 special "diversity visas" allowing Yemeni nationals to immigrate to the United States since 2000, the year 17 U.S. sailors were killed when the USS Cole was attacked by terrorists in the Yemeni port of Aden. The "diversity visas" are designed to encourage immigration from countries that do not otherwise send significant numbers of immigrants to the United States.
The State Department roster of all countries whose nationals have received "diversity visas" to immigrate to the United States in 2010, for example, shows that 2 of these immigrants will be from Luxembourg, 3 from the Solomon Islands, 4 from French Guiana, 5 from Reunion, 6 from Cape Verde, 7 from Malta, 8 from Guinea-Bissau, 9 from Comoros, 10 from Suriname--and 72 from Yemen. Nationals of the four states listed by the State Department as state sponsors of terrorism--Cuba, Iran, Sudan, and Syria--also received "diversity visas" from the State Department to immigrate to the United States in 2010. These include 98 from Syria, 298 from Cuba, 1,084 from Sudan, and 2,773 from Iran.
That the U.S. would encourage immigration from Yemen during the past decade is of interest because of the terrorist problem in that country.
In a word...duh!
Clearly, the war on drugs needs to start in The State Deparment.

Are you shitting me? Surely. Surely. Please be a joke.
momof4 at January 6, 2010 7:25 PM
People are morons. We shouldn't be doing anything to Yemen except bombing terrorist camps on an as-needed basis. Fuck 'em.
Whatever at January 6, 2010 8:01 PM
The purpose of the program is to expand immigration to the United States from countries that do not typically sending large numbers of immigrants here.
Why? Is the State Department trying to collect the full set? We got one from São Tomé and Príncipe! Bingo! (Look it up http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S%C3%A3o_Tom%C3%A9_and_Pr%C3%ADncipe, it's fascinating. Link is dodgy but hit search and you'll find it)
I read the article and I can't find a reason why this purpose is desirable. Anyone know what their justification is?
Not my problem of course (I'm Australian), but I'm fascinated as to why they are focusing on nationality as their mechanism for distributing these visas.
Ltw at January 6, 2010 8:34 PM
I don't really see the problem here. It's not that many, presumably they're selective about who they're given to, and maybe if cousin Omar sends a nice postcard, tells the folks back home how nice it is here, they'd be less inclined to try to blow us up. I'm not saying that this is the idea that's going to bring world peace in our lifetime, but it's not entirely ludicrous.
clinky at January 6, 2010 9:56 PM
Amy,
I remember when I thought you were cool. You've become an Ann Coulter.
You want to reclaim the word? Be my guest...
Nicely done, slut.
Saying "Hi, fag-hag hags!" to your half-dozen fandykes.
Question: What do you do when you meet an Arab fag you adore?
Being made fun of for being a Jew made you, what, both anti-Jew and anti-Arab? Well, at least you know what a Semite is! (Answer= Both of those ethnic groups, because they are the same group separated by a common heritage, much like the Brits and the Yanks are the same group separated by a common language.)
I'm sure this comment will get deleted, because I know only Crid is allowed to make sweeping insults here.
'nite.

If only.

Re: "Hasan" (the comment up above here, if it hasn't been deleted)
I hope that guy isn't here on one of those diversity visas, because that would kind of invalidate my earlier argument...
clinky at January 6, 2010 10:55 PM
If only United States will stop giving out this kind of diversity visas, it will be a much safer place. Too much irrational influence from diversity just create more disharmony.
WLIL at January 6, 2010 11:32 PM
Thing about comments like that is, it would be neat to know why he's angry.
Clinky, I like the Tiger/Alternate Tiger on your blog.
The evening news ain't what it used to be.

Like they were selective about the Panty Bomber.
Hasan, nice work on the name-calling! Clearly, you are utterly unable to articulate an actual intelligent point of view.
PS I don't delete people for being stupid or boorish. I like to help them let it all hang out.

Oh, and as careful as they are about all those terrorists they let out of Guantanamo and ship over to retraining school who go right back to terrorism, big surprise!

Oh, and as careful as they are about all those terrorists they let out of Guantanamo and ship over to retraining school who go right back to terrorism, big surprise!
Everyone released from Guantanamo is likely to be a terrorist, whether or not they were originally. If you had been arrested, and imprisoned for years with no legal recourse, wouldn't you be kinda pissed, and looking for revenge?
Guantanamo was an absolutely idiotic idea, and there is no graceful way out of the situation. What do you want to do, continue holding the prisoners there indefinitely? Shoot them?
bradley13 at January 7, 2010 3:42 AM
Amy,
Don't upset Hasan, she will start throwing food.
Suki at January 7, 2010 4:25 AM
"Shoot them?"
Yep. Like we should have shot them on sight, instead of taking illegal combatant prisoners in the first place
momof4 at January 7, 2010 6:03 AM
Hasan sure has a stick up their ass. Amy, did you cause this?
Roger at January 7, 2010 6:49 AM
"Yep. Like we should have shot them on sight, instead of taking illegal combatant prisoners in the first place"
This is one of the reasons America has such a shit-head image in so many countries that aren't America.
donald at January 7, 2010 7:20 AM
Amy, I asssume these visas are for the undercover helpers of the CIA and other intelligence agencies. Those who help CIA gather data are often risking themselves and their families. And it's a good bait as well to promice someone a safe trip Stateside to turn him a fieldagent or a helper.
Me at January 7, 2010 7:39 AM
Actually these visas are awarded in a lottery. Each country has a quota and names are drawn from the applicants until the quota is hit. The applicant just basically has to have a high school degree to apply for the lottery. (There is a more formal interview once the applicant wins a visa to make sure they are authorized to live in US, eg. no criminal record, not a member of a terrorist organization, etc.)

donald - I could care less about America's image in the turd-world.
TheDreaming at January 7, 2010 12:05 PM
I don't care about our image overseas either. I care about our safety here.
momof4 at January 7, 2010 1:09 PM
Add me to the list of those who fail to give a shit what our image is with bunch of terrorists. And please come on with the "terrorism is caused by the mean way we treat those poor innocents at Gitmo" crap. Will the people who buy that load also argue that 9/11, USS Cole, etc. were caused by Clinton's maltreatment of some other bunch of proto-terrorists?
MO4, is this the same thread in which we were lamenting the sad death of common sense?
Robin at January 7, 2010 1:28 PM
people who bitch about gitmo dont have a clue. These are POW's at best (I am being generous). POW's are normally held until some time after a war has ended. Most Germans were not repatrioted until 5 years after WWII and those were the lucky ones who were not held by the russians. The people at gitmo have absolutely no rights as far as I (and most Americans) are concerned. As usual it is just a bunch of liberal pussies who make the most noise that get the attention in the press. Fucking idealist idiots who want to endanger everybody's lives so they can attain their ideals. F off people, If I had my way you would be at gitmo too
ron at January 7, 2010 2:54 PM
Perhaps, common dreams is more important than common sense. Those asiatic and islamic people who keep on harping or implying that they have more common sense is too ridiculous to be called common sense. I certainly don't want to have their type of shitty common sense or have anything to do with their brutal dreams. sweet and practical dreams for me only.
WLIL at January 7, 2010 3:00 PM
@ quikaa1: I woulda said the same, should I been planning to take some defectors out of a country like Yemen.

Eh, either one works for me. I'll let them take their pick.

Even if that's true, it's a noise well worth making. Even if they don't deserve an American citizen's standard of justice, decent men have to ask:
What did we ever think we were ever going to DO with these guys?
This war could last twenty generations. "For the duration" is not a meaningful metric, and their incarceration is not a meaningful expression of American ideals.

I asssume these visas are for the undercover helpers of the CIA and other intelligence agencies.
Never assume. See random picks in lottery comment below yours.
Amy Alkon at January 7, 2010 11:50 PM
Amy, but please, they could not have possibly called them "earmarked for defectors"? Like, can you imagine in Cuba or Iran some specific place, where people bring their applications, right? Then they gather together with kinfolk and friends, and watch a bobby-socked girls with a bright ribbon pick out numbers and all those present applaud cheerfully to the lucky winners, oh yeah.
