Maybe It Was The OTHER Vietnam
You know, the one just north of Pennsylvania Avenue, in Washington, D.C. Amazingly, Attorney General Richard Blumenthal, now running for the U.S. Senate, talks about serving in Vietnam -- like so, in this New York Times piece by Raymond Hernandez:
"We have learned something important since the days that I served in Vietnam," Mr. Blumenthal said to the group gathered in Norwalk in March 2008. "And you exemplify it. Whatever we think about the war, whatever we call it -- Afghanistan or Iraq -- we owe our military men and women unconditional support."There was one problem: Mr. Blumenthal, a Democrat now running for the United States Senate, never served in Vietnam. He obtained at least five military deferments from 1965 to 1970 and took repeated steps that enabled him to avoid going to war, according to records.
The deferments allowed Mr. Blumenthal to complete his studies at Harvard; pursue a graduate fellowship in England; serve as a special assistant to The Washington Post's publisher, Katharine Graham; and ultimately take a job in the Nixon White House.
In 1970, with his last deferment in jeopardy, he enlisted in the Marine Reserve, landing a coveted spot in a unit in Washington, which virtually guaranteed that he would not be sent to Vietnam. The unit conducted part-time drills and other exercises and focused on local projects, like fixing a campground and organizing a Toys for Tots drive.
Vile.
Blumenthal denies the allegations.
And here's another.
Whoopsy! From Hot Air, here's the video!
"We have learned something very important since the days I served in Vietnam..."

Uh, isn't that a crime?

Typical shithead politician.
The kind we need to get rid of.

Even the New York Times, even the New York TImes understands the righteous resentment soldiers feel for men who falsely claim to have given military service.
This is even a step above Spitzer in the suicidal-politician sweepstakes. I'll never understand these guys.

Normally, a Democrat would get a pass on this sort of thing. What blows my mind is that it was the NYT that broke the story.
Blumenthal must have pissed off the wrong people.

Lady, I got buddies who died face-down in the muck so you and I could enjoy this family restaurant!

What is WITH these people who get deferments from Vietnam and try to pretend they didn't?
Why do we even care whether they went to Vietnam to begin with? How is it relevant?
Do you think when our generation gets old anyone will care whether or not folks served in Iraq and Afghanistan?
NicoleK at May 18, 2010 7:47 AM
He would not be the first Democrat in the Senate to lie about service in Vietnam. I'm referring to Harkin - even I acknowledge Kerry was there.
MarkD at May 18, 2010 7:58 AM
The Times can't seem to keep its own story straight. The Hernandez piece in your post quotes Blumenthal saying ". . . I served in Vietnam." But the Ambinder article you linked to says that the Times doesn't have any statements that definitive from Blumenthal.

It all depends on how you define "in". According to the Clinton New Speak Dictionary, "in" can mean...

"Do you think when our generation gets old anyone will care whether or not folks served in Iraq and Afghanistan?" NicoleK
It will depend greatly if they themselves make a big deal about their service. This guy MADE a big deal, and the lie just got bigger. Basically he is just stupid. We don't need to care about if they served or not, unless they make it some kind of point of character, or leadership. Fakery makes you lose on both accounts.

Eric, my favorite BL line is still:
"We commit your mortal remains to the bosom of the Pacific Ocean, which you loved so well..."
Who knew Donny was an outdoorsman? Is he ever even seen in daylight, except in ashes?
Crid [cridcomment at gmail] at May 18, 2010 9:44 AM
I think we should give Mr. Blumenthal the opportunity to serve in Afghanistan for a year. It might change his vision of the world and a better respect of the title "Veteran".

Okay. On one hand,we got criminals recording their rapes, break-ins, vandalism, etc.
We got the Hey, Look At Me crowd that thinks the world wants to know everything they are doing or thinking about.
We have the videos right in front of us exposing every stupid stunt imaginable. Along with every fashion faux pas, every undignified facial expression, every model who trips on the runway.
And still, people think they can lie about their deeds and get away with it. What is the blind spot that makes a person think they can get away with their own personal bullshit, when it's so obvious that they can't?
You don't even have to do hours of research to catch them--it's all right there! Somebody should do a paper on it. Not me, somebody else. I'm busy tweezing my upper lip on MyFace.

More "you can't make this stuff up": Bristol Palin is asking up to $30,000 for speaker's fees to tell us all about, drumroll please, abstinence!
Crid- I've seen BL at least 100 times, and that scene with the ashes blowing all over the Dude always gets a belly laugh.
PS- Don't fuck with The Jesus.

Man is an asshat as are most politicians these days. As far as BL, wow, so many scenes and lines. "Nihilists! Fuck me. I mean, say what you like about the tenets of National Socialism, Dude, at least it's an ethos"

“On a few occasions I have misspoken about my service, and I regret that and I take full responsibility,” Mr. Blumenthal said at a news conference Tuesday at a Veterans of Foreign Wars post in West Hartford, “but I will not allow anyone to take a few misplaced words and impugn my record of service to our country.”
So There!
That's part of an article on Google right this minute. Gawd, what a knob.

Even the New York Times, even the New York Times understands the righteous resentment soldiers feel for men who falsely claim to have given military service.
The reason the New York Slime ran it now is that they knew the story would have enough time to burn out before November. It was going to come out regardless.
This is the SwiftBoat for Kerry that had about 4-5 months to burn.
The Bush DWI came out the weekend before the election. If it wouldn't have been for Gore being such an incompetent, he should have walked in.

"Uh, isn't that a crime?"
I know there is a Stolen Valor Act that makes it a crime to claim you have medals that you didn't earn. I don't think just saying you were there applies. It should, though. He's basically doing the same thing.

I would think she would be a pretty darn good spokeswoman for that. It's a pretty penny to pay for a cautionary tale, but I hope somebody pays it. That slime ball that knocked her up certainly isn't going to do a damn thing to support his kid.
