Heinlein Quote Of The Day
"There is no worse tyranny than to force a man to pay for what he does not want merely because you think it would be good for him."
--Robert Heinlein
I just heard Ayaan Hirsi Ali interviewed by my friend Jill Stewart at Center For Inquiry, so I'm especially mindful that there is worse tyranny (one example), but I'm no fan of the above, either. More on what Hirsi Ali said in the next few days.
Her new book that Gregg just bought me: Nomad: From Islam to America: A Personal Journey Through the Clash of Civilizations.

There is definitely worse tyranny, and I think things could always be made worse. I think phrases "nothing worse" or "no worse" or "nothing better", etc" is just a figure of speech.
Sometimes, this world scares me at many levels.

Heinlein is right. C. S. Lewis captured the same thought with more depth: those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for
they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

I don't see the depth.
Yeah, sure... People who'd tell others how to live think they're correct in doing so, circuitously flattering themselves.
This is worth its own aphorism? You hadn't heard?

The full quote fleshes it out:
"Of all tyrannies a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victim may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated, but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience."

Nah. Robber barons aren't secretly all about conscience.
They say CS Lewis said some great things, but I think this wasn't one of them.

And I thought this would be a blog on "Health Care Reform". That is so appropriate a quote.

If you really want to be thought a radical, just cite the Declaration of Independence.
You'll have to explain to some people what that is.

The road to hell is paved with good intentions.

"so I'm especially mindful that there is worse tyranny" It's really not worse just a more physical example of the same mentality. These primitive fuckers are doing it for what they believe is the girls good. So she can find a good husband and be faithful. I don't fear corruption and greed but true believers scare the shit out of me.

Its usually the self important idiots trying to protect the helpless idiots from themselves.
I wouldn't mind the former doing that for the latter...except those of us who can take care of ourselves and make our OWN decisions, get dragged along for the ride.
