Blue herons are awesome. I have a fishpond, and the racoons fish it regularly, and it's an on-going battle. One day last year I was sitting in my study, second storey, and I happened to look out the window to see a blue heron perched on the peak of the umbrella on the deck table, about 15 feet away. He/she turned a beady eye on me and then went back to staring at my fishpond.
I went to get the camera. The heron flew off to the carport, about 50 feet away - still close enough to maintain surveillance on my fishpond.
Later that day I checked the pond and found every fish was gone. I went later that day to re-stock the pond in case the heron returned. It's an honor to entertain so noble a guest.

Great pic. Long-legged son-of-a-guns.

Jim- that exact story happened to us last year, except our culprit was a grey heron!

OT, but here's tomorrow's likely NY Post headline: "WEINER PULLS OUT".
A very nice photo.
Thank you for sharing it.
