The Auschwitz Album
The story behind it is just below. View it with the sound on at this link:
18-year-old Lilly Jacob was deported with her family, and most of the Jews of Hungary, in the spring of 1944. On the ramp at Auschwitz she was brutally separated from her parents and younger brothers; she never saw any of them again. She was lucky and survived; yet, she was not always convinced of the blessing of having survived totally alone, bereft of family, friends and her world.Unlike all of the other survivors, she was granted a small miracle. On the day of her liberation, in the Dora concentration camp hundreds of miles from Auschwitz, she found in the deserted SS barracks a photo album. It contained, among others, pictures of her family and friends as they arrived on the ramp and unknowingly awaited their death. It was a unique tie to what once had been, could never return, and could never be rebuilt.
It was also, as we now know, the only photographic evidence of Jews arriving in Auschwitz or any other death camp.

This was the subject of a TV documentary last year.
Also included was a photo album taken by one of the Nazi officers, showing he and his cohorts on the job, relaxing at dinner, partying with girlfriends, and playing with his dog.
Chilling stuff.

Sadly it isnt all that uncommon, people hae been commiting genocide ever since our group loyaly shifted up to the level of 'nation'
Andas history has shown time and again, once all others have been dealt with loyalties shift to the 'tribe' level and the once unified nationaily group will begin killing each other

These pictures are startingly similar to what Chris Christie is doing in NJ.

I agree, gassing millions is exactly identical to refuting the liberal worldview.

I cannot look or listen now. Reading The Book Thief as Amy suggested. Seeing my psychiatrist on Monday to adjust my meds. Being told the stories when I was five by my family did not have the impact on my wellbeing as reading about it today.
Chris Shelton - your worldview is seriously damaged. You must be very young, so there may be hope for you. God speed.

Gregg picked it out for me at the airport, or I might not have read it. (I always follow Gregg's book recommendations...he's very good.)
Good luck with your meds. Here's a post by Emily Deans (psychiatrist I respect) on magnesium and depression/the brain that may be helpful:

Thanks for the link Amy.
And for the book recommendation. I bought two, one for me, and the other for my teenage daughter who is studying the time period in high school. I do dread reading it each day but I can't stop. I hope that it somehow gets happier by the end.

Can't get the link to open (5:10 PM EDT, 17 June).
The Book Thief? My middle daughter insisted that I read it. I resisted at first; I prefer light reading, mysteries and such like. I finally relented and took it with me to National Guard duty last weekend. I finally finished it day before yesterday.
Dave B., my reaction was much the same as yours. It's tough going, but I didn't want to stop. And tearing up while riding the Metro is sort of embarassing. It's probably the second-saddest book I remember reading.

"Chris Shelton" is probably a union operative for the Communications Workers of America of New Jersey. They launched a big campaign yesterday to explicitly compare Chris Christie to Hitler, and they are putting a lot of money into it. I got a very similar comment (from a different user name) on my totally non-political, almost-no-one-reads-it blog.
