Muslim Cleric: "There Is A Beating Etiquette"
In Islam, you can't just haul off and beat your wife any old way. There are rules, Bub! But, they're for your wife's own good, really they are.
The guy claims you can't haul off and smack her unless she refuses to have sex with you, and then, well, she's fair game for a good whipping.
"All these things honor the woman...she is in need of discipline," says Egyptian cleric Sa'ad Arafat in the video. He adds that "Allah honored wives by instating (sic) the punishment of beatings."
And, in case you were wondering about the correct way for a Muslim man to beat his wife, here's just one example:
"He can beat her with a short rod..."
Cool! Even in Islam, it seems size matters.
Handy-dandy Quran reference (no beating around the bush here...so to speak) about beating women until they obey you:
Qur'an (4:34) - "Men are the maintainers of women because Allah has made some of them to excel others and because they spend out of their property; the good women are therefore obedient, guarding the unseen as Allah has guarded; and (as to) those on whose part you fear desertion, admonish them, and leave them alone in the sleeping-places and beat them; then if they obey you, do not seek a way against them; surely Allah is High, Great."
More here.
I love that this guy is saying all this with such a patriarchal, God-loving smile. Such a loving soul.
Why is it always the sickest sons-of-bitches on the planet that are somehow able to talk and smile at the same time?
For the sake of humanity, I really hope that the translation is somehow skewed. I have no way of knowing and no reason to doubt its veracity. Is there a fan of Amy's blog that speaks Arabic and can vouch for the translation?
If that's really what both these guys are saying, and I have no reason to believe it isn't, that's a really, really sick couple of guys.

I don't know if Allah is high but I'm certain about the misogynist followers of I-slam (women).
It must take some serious Stockholm Syndrome to populate this misbegotten "religion."
BlogDog at June 22, 2011 6:17 AM
Stockholm Syndrome?
Nah. If all you know is the rod, the thought of a life without the rod is an alien concept: strange and frightening.
The devil you know and all that...

When you're doing something that you know in your heart of hearts is very, very wrong, one of the ways you rationalize it is to formalize it with a lot of rules and procedures and rituals. It's a way of concealing and dispersing the guilt. You can convince yourself that you have no responsibility for the terrible thing you are doing, because you have no choice. The rules say you must do it!
(Comparisons to government bureaucracy are appropriate.)

A friend of mine is a Christian Arab who grew up in the Middle East. He doesn't comment on blogs, but he reads my blog and emailed me:
"MEMRI did a very good job at translating. One of your readers was questioning the veracity of the translation. I speak Arabic and I can vouch for the translation."

The best solution would be to infect someone taking a Hajj with something fairly fast acting with a short incubation period so it burns out quickly and cant spread too far

WhistleDick, if you go here:
http://notmyprophet.wordpress.com/
you'll find videos & transcripts of a supposedly moderate Imam in Washington state saying it in English. A sampling:
1:23:30 "Now why does the Qur'an say that men can beat the women? Allah was very very clear in that there's one instance, and it has, and you have to understand it's not every man can beat up his woman he comes home he, he taste the soup, the soup is not salty, he slaps his wife on the face, the soup is too salty. That's not what Islam teaches"
1:26:00 "And those you fear who are going astray (quotes Qur'an) the first thing you do? You advise them, you think your woman, if your woman wants to remove her hijab, wants to walk on the streets...What do you do? You advise her...she wants to insist to keep doing what she's doing? (quotes Qur'an). After that you leave them you don't approach them, at night in the bed, you stay away from them and you punish them. You basically, Allah says what? First talk to them, then put them on time out. But then if they insist? Well then you hit them"

This proves it: they invented the zero.
Gog_Magog_Carpet_Reclaimers at June 22, 2011 10:08 AM
The sick thing is that the guy is saying this because there are so many guys that beat their wives so hard that it's a problem.
Let me reiterate... the guy is advocating restraint in the context of their culture.
Scary, eh?

What the hell do Muslim clerics teach, or preach, in this country? Is it here that all the peace talk goes on, and everywhere else this crazy talk.
Dave B at June 22, 2011 1:16 PM
We have Muslim women who are victims of domestic violence come into the hospital where I work frequently. They genuinely believe they deserve to be hit. When you've been told from birth that you are worthless, and lower than a cow, it's asking a lot to expect that women at the age of 25 to suddenly embrace gender equality. It's not that they don't want a better life, but they truly cannot wrap their heads around the idea that their life is valuable. And if they do start to think that way, their fathers are more than willing to run them down in a parking lot (Muslim girl in Phoenix).
UW Girl at June 22, 2011 2:33 PM
Reminds me of the etymology of the "rule of thumb." If I recall correctly, this term originated from the idea that a man can beat his wife only with a stick or rod the thickness of his thumb or less. We were once pretty damn sick that way, too.
Islam must be such a wonderful religion for some women: first, the woman has her clit cut off as a young girl, so that any sex she experiences would probably be just a tiresome rubbing, w/out orgasms or any real pleasure. And then, she decides one night that she does not want to endure the tiresome rubbing, and her husband gets to smack her around.
These 57 OIC countries must be such wonderful places to live as a woman!

Again, the Bible is taken as allegory. The Quran is to be taken literally and unquestioningly as the word of god. This is all in the comments multiple times at this link I'll paste in. Read there, and educated yourself -- unless, of course, you're just lying about Islam per Islam's taqquiya.

This is why you don't see Christians killing disobedient children, but you find Muslims murdering 3,000 "infidels" at the World Trade Center and shoving bombs up their asses to try to bring down planes.
Amy Alkon at June 23, 2011 6:50 AM
And they call it the religion of "Peace". HAH! More like the religion of pieces. Especially when you have a mother strapping a suicide bomb onto her 9 year old daughter. REALLY?! What kind of mother with the maternal instincts would knowingly send her daughter out to die?!

You mean like Matthew 5 17-20 where Jesus said he was not there to abolish the Law of Moses? Of which not one word of the laws were to be tampered with or ignored? And then threatened eternal damnation upon anyone so self righteous as to question and teach other to ignore the commandments of god and his prophets?
Tell me Keith, why are the faithful consistely the least informed when it comes to thier own religion?
