Never been to New Orleans, but this reminds me of my first trip to Singapore two years ago. It was like a Sauna all day and it never stopped. In fact, I was told that this climate was pretty constant all year (!). The only place I remember where I had to change clothes twice a day.

Was there once in the summer for a wedding. It would have been unbearable for a Californian, but for the food and the jazz. Hope you get to enjoy both.

I adore new orleans. Was there in July last year for a girls weekend. Took the cemetary tour. It was awesome, but so hot I nearly got heatstroke until a rainstorm blew in. Never been so happy to get soaked in my life!
You must at least take a carriage ride around the quarter. Those drivers know tons of history.
momof4 at July 21, 2011 5:33 AM
The very best thing about New Orleans is the coffee with chicory. We relocated to Iowa after the Storm, but I still drink my coffee N'awlins-style.
Amy if you get the chance, go to Drago's out by Lakeside mall for a plate of grilled oysters. They are a low carb dream and even people who say they don't like oysters become converts after Drago's.

Hey Goddess - keep your dog with you.
For protection.
Just look at this chihuahua in action:

Love love love N'awlins!! Have a great time, and be sure to stop at Jean LeFitte's Blacksmith Shop in the Quarter, corner of Bourbon and St. Philip's. Serious atmosphere (and the place is haunted, I saw it for myself!). And if you're looking for great food and better jazz, check out Snug Harbor on Frenchman Street. The Marsalis clan jams there quite often. Alfredo's, across the street, has an excellent steak and shrimp scampi.
Flynne at July 21, 2011 6:25 AM
Come for the sauna, stay for the jambalaya!

I love hot and humid, don't have to use my dry eye drops. :-) But I recommend air conditioning for you!
Catherine at July 21, 2011 7:02 AM
Hey, Amy - let's have coffee. Iced coffee. I'll be at the reception this afternoon and then around most of Friday and Saturday. Looking forward!
Kevin at July 21, 2011 7:08 AM
Kevin - sounds great. We're at the Country Inn now, which is hilarious because it's in airport country, but we'll be at the hotel in a few. Will look for you at the reception...tonight, you mean?
And Ben-David, saw that!
And I hate air-conditioning but prefer it to weather of any kind!

Also, a carriage ride sounds great vis a vis the drivers knowing stuff.

My most favorite thing about New Orleans was the muffaletta sandwiches at Central Grocery (I think it is down the street and around the corner from Jackson Square, but I could be wrong - it's been a long time). They are one of the best things I've ever ate in my life! Even better than the beignets! If you get a whole one, you really need a buddy or two to share it with!
Kima at July 21, 2011 8:17 AM
Hi Amy, I was there a few weeks ago with my grandfather--it was hot but fun. If you get the chance--the New Orleans School of Cooking was one of my favorite places/activities and best values. Enjoy NOLA!

Amy - yes, see you at the reception tonight.
Carriage rides are a crapshoot. Some of the drivers know their stuff, while others just BS their way through the French Quarter. I've heard them identify about 6 different buildings as "the original House of the Rising Sun" (which, by the way, didn't exist outside the song).
Kevin at July 21, 2011 9:33 AM
Oh! And Yo Mamma's! I forget which street it's on, but it's right off Bourbon (St. Peters, maybe? Seems like all the side streets are named for saints!), I tried the gator gumbo there. (The turtle soup wasn't in season yet!) The burgers are supposed to be the best, too, but I've heard mixed reviews. They serve a Peanut Butter Bacon Burger, but I didn't try it, I decided to save it for the next time I go!
Flynne at July 21, 2011 10:10 AM
Does that city still have the racist mayor who insisted assistance was slow because It's a "chocolate city"? I wouldn't spend a dime in that city.
ronc at July 21, 2011 11:44 AM
so just because the mayor is allegedly racist, you would punish businesses without regard as to whether they share his beliefs?
LL at July 21, 2011 11:51 AM
ll, in a word, yes of course. Economics is the only weapon we have to force the citizens to not elect pricks like that. I alos boycotted san francisco many years ago for stinking up the state of california with their liberal politicians and progressive wing nuts, and encourage everybody I know to do the same.
ronc at July 21, 2011 12:16 PM
lol I don't care if New Orleans and San Francisco elect white supremacist puppy eaters for mayor. Nothing can keep me away from those awesome cities. Have fun, Amy! I am jealous thinking about all the good food you are eating there.
sofar at July 21, 2011 1:57 PM
Hooray for sauna weather! Born and raised in New Orleans, and can't wait to go home in January. (And given the area of the convention, I'll throw in another recommendation: Cochon, only about a mile away, and full of fabulous meat, as implied by the name. :) )

"I don't care if New Orleans and San Francisco elect white supremacist puppy eaters for mayor."
Well, then. Hitler liked dogs.
Radwaste at July 21, 2011 3:27 PM
And with that, we've been Godwin'd.
Sam at July 21, 2011 3:58 PM
Muffaletta's at Central Grocery were the best!! Go off no carb for at least one meal and that's the one!! We ate all over New Orleans and didn't ever have one bad meal. In fact all were delicious!!
And I know you said you won't be doing much sight seeing, but I'd highly recommend the 9th Ward tour. It is truly amazing.
Kristen at July 21, 2011 5:50 PM
Welcome to the South! We like to turn the humidity up extra high when we have guests from California.
Cousin Dave at July 21, 2011 8:41 PM
I don't care for New Orleans food (not a cajun or creole girl), but I make an exception for beignets, coffee, and mufalattas.
momof4 at July 22, 2011 6:14 AM
Meanwhile, in Syracuse the temperature went to 101 with humidity to match. Now that we've caught up with the weather, we just need to work on the food and we'll be a tourist magnet too.
Auditioning for a government job. It's about as dumb as these "give them tax breaks now, and they'll promise to create jobs later."
MarkD at July 22, 2011 7:13 AM
woops, left off the last word. schemes.

Yeah. Wouldn't want to give those white supremacist puppy eaters a bad name!

Beignets.
Also, Coffee.
(Dunno the other one, is that the cornbread thing, or can we move straight to the gumbo?)
