There's never a vigilante around when you need one. Or a cop for that matter.

Cynicism aside, George Zimmermann is finding out just how much support you get when you do look out for your neighbors. We've created a culture that teaches people to let the government take care of it. They'll try to solve the crime, but they've no duty to protect you.

I have problems with this story. But maybe part of the problem is that no single person thinks he/she can survive and/or win protesting against five thugs while unarmed.

D.C. and Chicago have no concealed carry laws. So essentially no private citizen is armed outside of the home. (Most can't even be armed in the home, but that is another story.) If an armed citizen could have stepped up, and addressed the thugs, even without pulling out a firearm, the story may have been different.

And as shown here, it isn't the firearm that is the problem, it is the person holding the weapon.

Amy, that was a hate crime, committed not by teenage thugs but by specifically black teenage thugs. No reason to skip a fact like that.
