On A Bad Day, You're Still In California
Morning view in Palm Desert a few weeks ago, where Gregg had a meeting. I went along, poor me: View from the outside of Magda Gabor's house -- or as Palm Springs Life refers to her, one of Jolie Gabor's "three Hungarian pastries," who turned getting married into an industry:
And a windy goodbye!

What a pretty sunrise! Now I'll have to see if I can convince somebody to send me out to the West Coast again -- it does kind of grow on a person.
I get the feeling that our gracious hostess doesn't miss Michigan all that much.

Although I have a few favorites in the state, in no particular order:
1. The people of Traverse City
2. Elmore Leonard
3. Dr. Barbara Oakley
4. Karen De Coster (have yet to meet her, but she's badass and on-fire as a thinker, and I hope to have drinks with her soon)
5. Wayne State law prof Kingsley Browne

On A Bad Day, You're Still In California
I do agree. If it's a bad day, it may be because you are in California. :-)
Not one of my favorite places. Boring weather, too much smog and too many people. Not to mention the nutty politics.

Have you actually been here in the last 10 years?

too much smog
Had to go to Southern California a couple of weeks ago to teach a class. It was pollen season when I left Virginia; my wife, the kids, and I were miserable. In California, I actually got better.

News / Offtopic / Non-joke (I posted some jokes in the joke page today, too. Should we not put serious stuff in the joke page? Listen, you know me... I'm just trying to get along with people here... I just want everyone to be comfortable.)
The moral of this story is apparently You must never do anything that allows the government to make itself look bad. Even when government fucks something up months ago, you have to to give it a way to pretend it didn't fuck up.

WOnder what Amy would think of this.
Yes, the government is being busybodies, but McDonald's sucks, indisputably.

I like 'em better, but do you suppose their beef is any less-processed?
By the way, just a head's up... When you're over fifty, you can still eat at In-n-Out, but you have to run back to your car ASAP afterward, because they send a big mean kid from behind the grill to slap you around when you're done. This is young people's food, and they don't want you to forget it.
Time to be eating more raw green peppers anyway. Next to three crackers beside a thick slice of good cheese and some grapes or strawberries.

We get the double-double (double cheese burger) protein style (no bun) with extra grilled onions.

I can deal with riding the storm out better than "you have to separate your trash" and having 37,691,912 people living on top of me.

Had the opportunity years ago to see REO, was disappointed at Gary's work despite nice songwriting. I had seen McLaughlin from ten feet away a couple of months before, and he tends to impress.

Dude, for fuck's sake... Terry Bradshaw had a better season in '76 than did the quarterback (name forgotten) of my high school football team (name forgotten).
Context, OK? Proportion. Context.

No - and this is by FZ's own admission. He toured with Mahavishnu Orchestra (who?) back in the day, and after the opening night, he switched the order and opened for them.
For biting social commentary, FZ's your guy. But he knew what was what on stage, too. You'll find a lot of common elements between them. You probably knew that.
Radwaste at April 25, 2012 5:18 PM
He never admitted nuthin', but Ruthie (vibes) tells the tale here.
Crid at April 26, 2012 6:49 AM
FZ's entire Mahavishnu phase lasted just long enough to record this... He out-McLaughlin'd John McLaughlin, and then he moved on.
