I understand that this guy was a child star, and that his stardom happened in a maudlin TV show long after I was young enough to care about such things. I further understand that these most torpid & superficial media products are still instances of human interaction, requiring some breezy, milquetoast personality as their face; and readily concede that consumption of these media is volitional almost without exception.
Nonetheless.
Could someone please explain the appeal of NPH?

Busted link, sorry. An exception.

His stardom wasn't limited to his childhood. He just switched mediums for a while and became a huge hit on Broadway before returning to TV. NPH is hot, talented, lets his geek shine, has a great sense of humor, and is by all accounts a genuinely nice dude. Everything I want in a guy, everything a lot of women want in a guy.
Except for the whole being gay thing.

Why except? That sure seems to be exactly what many women are interested in.

How did you find out about my Tony Awards slashfic?

He was a faded child star who had become a pop-culture joke...and then he made a soaring comeback by laughing at himself.
He's an openly gay actor who convincingly plays a womanizer on "How I Met Your Mother." Barney Stinson is a great character, and NPH owns him. He has great comedic timing. He sings. He played Dr. Horrible in "Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog."
A lot of Gen X chicks also remember having a huge crush on him when he was Doogie Howser.
