I live in the midwest. We don't seem to have the problem that much that I've seen. At the same time I don't go to many places with crowds anymore.

I'm going to retract my comment of earlier -- I thought politeness was a learned trait an would transcend borders.
My sister was visiting a Chipotle's for her first time today. She told me ahead of time. From my side of the conversation -- she would have stayed on the phone the whole time she was going through the line.
Knowing what she was about to do, I preempted her and got off the phone.
She was in the "Oh, you're right" category, not the "I am totally f'ing rude." category.
