Weigh In: Do Men And Women Decorate Their Desks And Cubicles Differently?
And if so, how?
When you work in an office where other people see your workspace, how you decorate -- and whether you decorate -- says a lot about who you are. Sometimes these are messages you're putting out intentionally; sometimes, they're subconscious.
So...those of you who aren't freelancers working at home...what do you have decorating your work space? (Let us know whether you're a man or woman and why you decorated as you did -- if you decorated.)
And especially, I'd like to know whether people have framed pictures of their significant other in their workspace, and whether those who do are men or women. (I'm wondering if there's any kind of male/female divide in whether people put out photos.)
UPDATE: Well, it seems only fair that I show you my office from when I worked at a company (Ogilvy & Mather Advertising, where I worked as an assistant producer and then a producer, right out of college). I just remembered that I had a Polaroid of it from back in the day.
As you can see, I forgot to be the kind of person who has only a single, beautiful pen and the tiny zen sandbox on her desk. Oh, and P.S. That's a young Seth Green coloring at my desk.

I have one 8x10 framed picture each of my wife and my daughter and an 8x10 framed photo of the Arenal volcano that I took on our vacation last year. I also have a calendar that I get each year from our travel agent that has photos of various vacation spots.
Other than the coffee maker, the rest is all work stuff.

Mine is a combination of maps and charts, the "I love me" wall (where I have some awards and things from previous programs), some Indycar models, and -- most importantly -- a chart that shows all of the rank and insignia of the U.S. military. It would be more maps and charts and less of the other, except that they don't let us post anything that's FOUO on the wall, even though it's a locked area. Stupid clean-desk policy, grumble grumble.
So it's Friday afternoon and there's not many people here, and I took a walk around. Most people have decorated in a pretty similar manner. I discern no difference between the men's and women's cubes. Then again, this is an engineering-geek shop.
Cousin Dave at July 13, 2012 11:20 AM
Oh, and I do have a framed photo of my dear wife. It's from when we first met, which was a while ago now. But in my eyes, she still looks the same.

Woman here.
When I was working in a cube, I decorated with some pictures of loved ones. My husband keeps our wedding picture in a frame on his desk.
I worked for a newspaper and we would get tons of free PR stuff -- stuffed animals, plastic action figures, etc., so I mostly decorated with that. My cube was a mess, so I think it was more like storage than decorating.
MonicaP at July 13, 2012 11:27 AM
Also, I had a picture a friend took in South America of a rotting severed bull's head. It was odd and appealed to me, but I kept that one angled so only someone sitting at my desk could see it.
MonicaP at July 13, 2012 11:30 AM
On my desk, a small framed picture of my wife and me standing side by side and holding each other. The picture faces me, and can't be seen from the guest chairs
Multiple pictures of my kids on the bookcase, along with carved ironwood sealife figures and small optical entertainment devices.
Enlarged, framed seascape photos I have taken on the wall facing me.
Educational, honorary, and professional certificates on the wall behind me.
Martial arts training and group photos and plaques on one wall, with various belt level and instructor certificates on another wall, and tournament trophies on the filing cabinet.
Miniature zen garden on a plant-stand.

I'm at the front desk, and only have one picture of my kid, on a bulletin board. I'm female, the only non-executive in the office, and the only one in a public space. I don't really have any room for extra stuff on the desk. Everyone else has their own office. I'd probably have a few more personal items if I wasn't out here in the lobby.
My boss the VP (male, early 50's) has several pictures of his wife and stepkids, plus his framed university diploma, a framed autographed pic of Nolan Ryan, and a Ronald Regan calendar.
The female executive (early 40's) has the framed diploma, picures of kids, kid art, some memorabilia, and a bumper sticker that says, "Bush is a punk-ass chump."
Junior lobbyist (male, single, early 30's) has pictures of his grandparents, pics of himself with important people (like Rick Perry), and some stuff commemorating his work at the state Capitol.

When I had my own personal work space I decorated (within Kaiser's guidelines as we were limited on how much we could have). I had a Happy Bunny calendar, a small photo frame of SO and me, a small pink stuffed bunny, and then personalized my office supplies/accessories. I had a pink keyboard rest, pink car mouse, pink pen/pencil organizer, and a pink Post-It dispenser with pink flower-shaped Post-Its. And of course I had pink pens. Nothing exciting in terms of decorating as we were only allowed up to 6 personsl items for decorating which fortunately didn't include office supplies. I now work in an area with shared desk space so we aren't allowed any personal decorations.

Ok 4 offices heres the deco:
First me - male- A poster from a trip I took, with a cloaked rider over a wintery land. A dilbert candy dispenser, a LoTR pez dispenser, Gimli. Several work related schedules and map.
The one female coworker- 2 hanging plants, 4 framed 5 unframed pictures of family) 1 framed pict of flower, one framed photo of space shuttle coming in for landing. Screensavers of grandkids. Calendar of college, that youngest kid is at. Several work related print outs.
Next male coworker- a wall hanging he has from a trip, 2 work related printouts.
Finally the bosses office- male- 2 framed art pieces- Davinci and a building, 3 diplomas/certifications, a framed collage of photos, mostly family. Lots of sports memorabilia: A signed baseball, bobbleheaded basketball player, mugsteam wastebasket. Since he is the owner I guess general common room decorations get assigned to him as well: Large fish tank, 1 comical art work, a few clippped comics, a few generic framed wall pictures, some more sports memorabilia, various maps.
One thing of note we don't get outside visitors.

I work in a university environment in IT, so there's a bit of latitude for what can be in my cubicle. so right now ... family photos, star wars toys, superman toys, a nerf gun here, an Airzooka there. All in all when others bring their kids in, they generally head to my desk.
Most of the ladies around here are either 100% family photos, or a mix of family photos and some collection or another (e.g. disney, etc.)

Mostly pictures of family (husband, son, mom, and grandmother) right by/on my desk, 3 generic paintings on the walls to fill empty space, and a vase filled with peacock feathers in the corner. The rest isn't really decor, just work print outs, calendar, clock etc.
Chelsey at July 13, 2012 1:16 PM
I'm female.
Apart from work-related stuff, my cubicle has several small anime and video game figurines - Vincent Valentine (Final Fantasy VII) guards my In-Tray, Yuna (Final Fantasy X) and Rinoa (Final Fantasy VIII) watch from the side, Tachikoma patrols under my monitor while CEO Jameson is perched on top (both are from Ghost in the Shell: Standalone Complex), and Master Chief and Arbiter (the Halo series) defend my pencil holder.
I also have a small framed cartoon by Bill Watterson (of Calvin & Hobbes fame) called "The Creative Process - how it's done - the fascinating process revealed!" (it depicts him sitting in front of a blank drawing table with a slack jaw and a panicked look - as a graphic artist who gets the question "how do you think of this stuff?" a lot, I thought it was hilarious and true). Normally I also have postcard- and letter paper-sized prints of art I've collected at art fairs, anime conventions, and the Internet, but since the company moved into new offices earlier this week and I didn't know how much wall space I'd have, I haven't brought them in yet.
I think my decorations just reflect my personal interests - I've been an avid gamer and anime fan and artist for many years. I've thought about bringing in a photo of my cat or boyfriend, but found that I really don't need to, they're always in my mind anyways.
Jina at July 13, 2012 1:29 PM
I used to keep a lot of Star Wars memorabilia and things around, but then I read that filling your workspace with toys and gags can lead to people not taking you seriously.
I used to also have a picture of Ronald Reagan, which I put up as part of a good-natured back and forth with co-workers, taken down now for the same reason. I don't want my personal politics to affect my work relationships.
These days I have a framed joke that pertains to my industry/department (lighthearted, not cynical) and a couple of iconic souvenirs that were given to me by iconic clients. I have an otherwise clear desk with lamp, pencil cup, and docking station. Walls have company-provided artwork.
I have a talented co-worker whose cubicle is filled with Beanie Babies and McDonald's toys, and I really believe that helps create an unfavorable impression. Her unprofessional (in many ways) image is one reason her star has never risen.

This man prefers a minimalist environment. If it is functional or related to work, I most definitely do not want it there, nor could I learn to tolerate it.
Patrick at July 13, 2012 2:18 PM
A small money tree (I think it's defective, it hasn't grown any money at all); a few snapshots of kids and grandkids on my monitor stand and what looks to be the remnants of a paper bomb that previously exploded.
In all seriousness, I have so many files and crap related to the work I do, there isn't much room for personal stuff. I used to have tons of stuff, before I got super busy.
sara at July 13, 2012 2:43 PM
I have multi-colored Xmas lights, a red-shaded lamp with a tassel that looks like a fez, fake plants in metal buckets, a few cool posters, some comic strips, and a bunch of print-outs of my favorite Draw Something drawings.
No pictures of me and the spouse. Or of just him. Though come to think of it, I should put up a picture or two of the cats.

Female, way off center. Large cube w/door, even! Pics of my daughters in band uniforms, and at poolside w/younger cousins (2 female, 1 male). One photo of my dad and 3 brothers after a day of golf (circa 2003, one of my faves). One 5 generation photo - great gramma holding daughter #1, gramma, ma, & me. Framed Notary Public certificate. Number 1 nephew w/my daughters. Nephews #2 &3, in a pic from their father's 2nd wedding. One oxalis (purple leaves, pinkish flowers), one spider plant (on overhead shelf). Birthday dinner pic w/Bf and daughters. Autographed pic of Ian Hunter. Horse calendar. Bookkeeping and invoicing notes. Company phone contact list. Couple other certificates. Travel schedule for VPs currently in Paris (due back on Monday). Timmy the monkey decal from Think Geek. Artwork from daughter #1, picture of a pretty fairy w/wings, rose motif, as a playing card, the Queen of Roses (red and black ink drawing on white paper, red matte frame), done as a senior (high school) art project. Water lilies drawn in chalk by daughter #2 in 3rd grade, first displayed in the town hall student art gallery in 2003. Batman pez dispenser next to 10-line console phone. Menu from Nica's deli. Uh, that's it (I think!).

In my cube, I have my professional awards and certifications in one area. I 4x6 have a picture of the hubster, one of my daughter, and one of my son. Then I have a few vacation pics - scenery and various other examples of my exemplary photography skills. (Just go with me on that one.) Then the entire back wall is covered with data models and the dry erase board. I also have the regular calendar and the fiscal calendar hanging up for reference.
All in all, it's pretty typical of the guys and the women I work with. But this one lady has bubble gum pink wrapping paper all over her cube like wallpaper. It's nauseating. I have to shake my head every time I walk by. Luckily it's not on my floor, so I don't have to see it very often.
KimberBlue at July 13, 2012 5:40 PM
Well, I guess this really doesn't count as I am a software trainer and usually I'm in the training room anyway, so a cube is not my real work space.
But, nothing in the cube if it isn't needed for work. No personal belongings.
Also, for the last several years the only work that I have found is as a temp, so even my personal coffee mug goes home with me each night - I've "lost" too many mugs after being called at home in the evening to be told the assignment is finished and to not bother going to work in the morning.

I worked in IT, where all the geeks have shiny toys and silly posters on their walls. A good friend fell in love with the figs that Burger King put in their kids meals for Lord of the Rings, so for a few weeks we all went and bought kids meals so that she could have the complete set. I can't look at a Burger King without turning green now.
I personally had pictures of my kids (natch), silly posters, a 20-sided die the size of a golf ball, a mug that said "Stress : The confusion caused when ones mind overrides the body’s natural desire to choke the living shit out of some asshole that desperately deserves it.". I think I had a nerf crossbow for a while, and I know I had a rubber-band gun. Also built a desktop trebuchet for the late-nite fixing the bugs some idiot stuck me with office sieges.
Even more telling of my attitude and mood was on a good day, I wore cute shoes. On a bad day, when people were pissing me off by not having their work done so that I could get mine done, or just being stupid in general, I wore my Doc Martins. My boss would laugh because he could hear me coming down the hall in the Docs, and knew I was in a mood. He was a good boss, tho', and always had my back because he knew I didn't get upset about the little things, and I never got him involved unless someone was really being a jerk. That plus, I was the Goddess of the team, and I knew my shit, and so of course he wanted to keep me happy :P

Female here, and I work in an office with 10 other voc people. Five males and six females (including me). Additionally, one male mental health counselor, a female billing clerk and the front desk gal.
My desk closely resembles the picture above, minus the typewriter and the young Seth Green. My walls are bare, with the exception of my cork board and my degree. My other credentials are in my desk drawer. I've got Merck's, Grey's, Motivational Interviewing, and some random research books on my shelf. Oh, and a plant. There is one personal item, but it's depressimg so I won't go into it.
The owner's son's office most closely resembles mine, except more organized. He has nothing personal that I can tell.
Everybody else has similar decor in their office. A few personal pics, some clipped articles, artwork and gifts from family and friends. I do think there is a difference in how most of the men and women display, but that's just my casual observation, not something I measured.
I used to play "guess the professor's gender" in college, based on their office decor. It was a fun way to pass the time.
My financial advisor and insurance agent are male and female, respectively. I always thought their decor is similar in balance between professional (yet comforting) decor and personal items. My financial advisor has a digital frame that cycles through his family pics, and the way it's displayed I always had the impression it was a personal item put there for a professional reason, if that makes sense.

I work with 10 men and 1 woman. The men all decorate mostly with industry-related pictures and knick-knacks. Most of them have "#1 Dad" office supplies that their kids give them for Father's Day, too! None of them have any personal photos. The woman, on the other hand, has every wall covered with photos of her kids and grandkids. There are beanie babies and craft project things all over. It makes me nervous to be in her cube!
I (a woman) decorated with vintage travel posters. I brought in a small vintage desk lamp, and I usually have a small vase of fresh flowers. Oh, and two apothecary jars filled with candy. I try to keep my cubicle inviting but professional. I don't have any personal pictures; I've never really liked to display family things at work. I'm kinda private about my personal life (which probably suits the men in the office just fine; I'm sure they really don't want to hear about it!).

Male, software developer and software business owner. I've never decorated my work environment with any personal decorations of any sort whatsoever, nor have I ever felt any inclination to do so .. my desk is usually just littered with piles of work-related rubble, e.g. different 'heaps' for different tasks I need to get done or specific customers (I do a *lot*, so my desk is usually full, just trying to keep track of everything). Actually only very recently did it finally occur to me that maybe it 'might be nice' to have a reminder or two of my family, i.e. wife and baby daughter, on my desk.
Lobster at July 13, 2012 9:41 PM
Male,
In small cube. Mainly storage takes up my entire cube (way more than I need but apparently the previous person needed it.) One wall is big white board. Back wall area not behind draws is a couple of company awards I have received. A few security inspections of the cube posted. Lab coat hangs in one spot. Only thing not work related is a little diagram that is funny...kind of industry related but probably applies to everyone who works a lot at a computer.
Others around me:
My manager (male) has a small family photo next to his monitor....only other decorations are company awards.
My neighbor (male) has photos of his kids as screen savers and awards.
Neighbor (female) a few mini statues of buhda (no awards) - computer wallpaper is husband.
Neighbor (female) lots of junk and very cynical posters. Claims cynical is her job since she is a QA/Tester person. Awards again. I have not noticed any pics of her kids or "wife" but there might be small ones in all the junk.
Neighbor (female) - only been there about 2 months - nothing.
Yes awards a big deal at this company.
The Former Banker at July 13, 2012 11:30 PM
Female, at home I decorate like crazy, have even considered going into interior decorating.
At work I do not decorate. I do not live there. I am there to make money and go home.
Also do not participate in secret Santa, holiday decorating contests, showers, bday parties, or buy fund raising stuff.
Run as fast as I can from any company who wants me to do charity work or bring in my own food drive items and then crow about it to the press.
Again, labor for money. That's all.
deathbysnoosnoo at July 14, 2012 8:22 AM
Nothing large or irreplaceable. I can be out of the office for good in less than fifteen minutes.
A magic eight ball - for when Excel models just don't provide the answer.
A small stack of Rhodia pads - the bright orange covers are eye-catching and the paper is so much better than the standard crappy office pad.
Conan the Grammarian at July 14, 2012 10:34 AM
Deathbysnoosnoo: You'd love our office. I've been there five years. Christmas parties the first two years, and none since, because nobody wants to plan, or for that matter, attend. That said, it is a great office. They've always been supportive when crummy things happen to another.
While still in college, I worked clerical for another company. The owner believed that volunteer work in the community was important, and encouraged his staff by offering 1-hour PTO for each hour volunteered (up to 20 hours per year). He also promoted certain charity causes, and received attention for it, but his product is sold internationally and speaks for itself. His reasons for the charity and volunteer work were directly related to his belief system, and the attention his company received was just icing. I really respect that man (for more reasons than are listed here).

I'm female and I work in a very large call center(300+ desks in one open room). Our cubes consist of a shelf on one side and a bulletin board on the other. I have a picture of a sunset I took at one of my favorite lake on the shelf and nothing on the bulletin board except for a couple of thumb tacks that I use to hang my head set on when not in use (I was promoted and I no longer take in-bond calls, thankfully!!)
I prefer clean and uncluttered. I used to keep up sheets with phone numbers I needed and other information for quick reference, but they move us around so much that got to be too much to take down/put up again, so that was all moved to a folder I keep in the paper tray. Stapler and tape dispenser are out of sight behind my monitor - again, I cannot stand clutter.
Around the rest of the call center, it is mostly the females that decorate, beyond a picture or too. Some have their own bulletin boards hung up with colored ribbon and things like that with pictures of them with friends and family. Some have lots of toys and knick knacks. The men seem to stick to work related papers.
