The Einstein haircut and mustache is pretty funny too!

OffTopic- There are people who take these things too literally; and who will forever think of LBJ as the 'President who liked to piss on people.' See also, 'J. Edgar Hoover liked to dress up like a girl.'
History is not improved by such reductionism. But for a certain sort of smug goofball, these accusations are too good to be false, evidence or no.
Crid [CridComment at gmail] at August 17, 2012 5:08 AM
Also, more on-topic why is Neil deGrasse Tyson famous/beloved?

Amongst the geeks and freaks at my house NdGT is admired for his obvious love of science, his engaging manner and his inability to tolerate bullshit. If astrophysics doesn't work out for him, the guy could make it in standup he's so funny. Also, evidence.

But, like, where did he come from? Robert Jastrow and Carl Sagan had résumés before someone put them on the tee vee. I know I could Wikipedia, but I wanna hear it from people who've made space in their hearts... Why? He seems like Katy Couric with a Bachelor of Science.

Also— 'Know what everybody hates most about Russia? The queers. That's right: The gays, the homosexuals. So Moscow's decided to take steps.

This is something for our friends at Reason Magazine to consider.
Let's not pretend that primitive nations are modern until they're really, y'know, modern.

I heart NASA nerds. HEART them, I tell you!

Concisely improvised compositions like this are what have made Iowahawk one of the most beloved conservative internet personalities: Precisely bookmatched snark & insight.
Crid [CridComment at gmail] at August 17, 2012 7:15 AM
I think he's popular because he is honestly earnest in his love of science, and can make it seem accessable without being overly technical or condesending to others

Flynne, angel, for eighteen billion dollars a year, you'd better love them.

Listen, I apologize... It's a poverty thing. Once we're all looking forward to tomorrow again, I'll try to stop being such a dick.

Promise??
o.O
Flynne at August 17, 2012 11:40 AM
There will always be a crisis. If we'd spent that $2.5 billion on starving people, there would still be starving people, because that doesn't go away. We're still reaping the benefits of NASA's successes in the form of ATMs, GPS, health care technology, etc. Worth every dime.
I saw one blog commenter call NdGT the "Sinbad of Science." I can agree with that.

No! That was just rhetorical. Again, let's not get carried away....

If we'd spent it on libraries, some of them would have had something to read. L.A.'s are closed on Sundays.
Los Angeles libraries are closed on Sundays.
So these PhD's can read soil samples from Mars?
Also, if Sinbad never once made me laugh, what gap will Tyson leave in my heart?

What's a library? People don't go to libraries anymore, silly wabbit. They buy their books off of Amazon and get their videos from Netflix.
Now I'm all sad. I miss libraries.

I love librarians and I'm grateful to them, and have been pretty much my whole life, and tell them I appreciate them with some frequency.

As do people without money for Amazon and Netflix.

Thought the rip on SpaceX amusing since NASA is relying on robot rovers and russian rockets these days.

I miss news stands. I loved that papery, inky smell of the place that sold the papers, the magazines, the paperback books...forget the cigar clamped in the grouchy old guys mouth.

Even my poorest friends, the people eating Ramen every night, seem to find $8 a month for Netflix. It's one of the cheapest forms of entertainment around.
I would still use my local library if it didn't suck. Part of that is budget cuts. Part of that is that a lot of people just don't use them or care anymore.
MonicaP at August 17, 2012 5:51 PM
And a lot of books on e-readers are free. You don't ever have to pay for a book if you don't want to. Video killed the radio star.
MonicaP at August 17, 2012 5:53 PM
There's more to libraries than information transfer.
Who, Monica, do you regard as more cynical than yourself? Serious.
