How It Should Be: What Divides Us And What Brings Us Together
Ken White at Popehat is defending Patrick Frey (Patterico) pro bono.
One Nadia Naffe has filed a vexatious federal suit against Patrick and his wife in retaliation for Patrick's exercise of his rights under the First Amendment to the United States Constitution. The estimable and formidable Ron Coleman, who blogs at Likelihood of Confusion, will be lead counsel, and is also acting pro bono.As a Deputy District Attorney, Mr. Frey is a professional adversary. As a blogger, he is substantially to the right of me, and though I respect his abilities and his honesty, I disagree with him more often than not. But I am honored to have the opportunity to serve him in defense of crucial free speech principles in the face of an abusive and politically motivated lawsuit.
There's a huge amount of nastiness about who's "team" is better, D or R, and even dehumanizing of people who have political beliefs we don't share. The people I respect the most are those who don't do this, and especially, those -- like Lisa Simeone and Popehat -- who can come together with those they disagree with politically to defend our civil liberties and fight those who violate them.
I have an immense debt of gratitude to Sicilian-American civil liberties bulldog Marc Randazza, who defended me against the TSA worker who tried to violate not only my Fourth Amendment rights and my vagina, but my First Amendment rights in the wake of that.
What'd Patrico say exactly?
NicoleK at October 4, 2012 8:20 AM
If you ever need the help I stand ready to
defend your vagina upon request.

So what is going on with the TSA lawsuit. Has it all just blown over?
PS- Is anyone else dogged by a sript running error on Amy's blog?
Eric at October 4, 2012 3:07 PM

Amy, the error occurs when navigating away from your blog (yea, admit it you don't want us to leave!)
Line: 1
Char: 1

Do you want to continue running scripts on this page?
I then click through this same error about 14 times.
Charles at October 4, 2012 8:42 PM
What is the lawsuit about? And I mean that in something a little more than "Nadia Naffe has filed a vexatious federal suit against Patrick and his wife in retaliation for Patrick's exercise of his rights under the First Amendment to the United States Constitution." What was the offensive speech cited?
Jim P. at October 4, 2012 9:38 PM
No errors here. Latest FF, Adblock & Noscript on OS 10.8.2. Noscript set to allow base URL and others, but not statcounter or assoc-amazon. The Mall link has that permitted.
Radwaste at October 4, 2012 10:29 PM
No script problems, though we can all agree that Mission Impossible II was a mess. Adblock here, and cookie-resistant. Nothing personal, but I've blocked all the usual images and dressings. (Redhead, right?)
Crid [CridComment at gmail] at October 4, 2012 10:49 PM
Jim, I agree, it's annoying that they don't tell you.
Even google doesn't get you a clear story immediately.
Apparently Nadia Naffe accused O'Keefe, the guy who made the ACORN pimp/ho videos, of something. And Patterico wrote about it and now she's suing him.
No idea what the facts are beyond that and whether or not she should be suing or not.
Here's a better summary:

Props to Nic for asking "Huh?"; the whole thing looks more tawdry than 1st Amendment-pivotal.

I'm getting that error too CHarles, only when I first click on the comments button to go from the headlines page to the individual post with comments. Annoying.

Are you all on PCs who are getting this error and what browser are you using?
Amy Alkon at October 5, 2012 5:42 AM
Amy - I'm on an XP machine using IE8 when I get the above error. If I use Mozilla Firefox I do not get the error.
(yes, yes, I know, I'm such a luddite using such an old PC; but, in this Obama economy those of us without work have to save for other things besides buying a new PC. I really should learn to say the following: Where's my foodstamps? I want "free" food! Where's my Obamaphone? I want an Obamaphone!)
Charles at October 5, 2012 6:19 AM
I am not getting the error and am on Firefox.
BarSinister at October 5, 2012 6:22 AM
Yep, Mac plus Firefox and no error.
Astra at October 5, 2012 6:42 AM
> I want an Obamaphone!
Make them give you one with the finger-screen and all the twinkly-colored boxes and stuff. You deserve the best, Charles... You deserve the best for just being you.
Seriously, we should never forget that the program which begat these phones was birthed during Ronald Reagan's first term. (Also, Boosh gave us "Homeland Security".)
This overview is somewhat lefty for my tastes, and the Atlantic is for shit nowadays, but we can't blame this on Obama.

(Portable Firefox and Portable Chrome) on Win7 & XP with Adblock Plus and no errors)

I love the title of this post. In my experience, among both my liberal and conservative friends, we share a common set of values: free speech, the listening to the speech, the freedom of religion, etc. One consistent theme is not trying to tell other people how to live, which once was a hallmark of American values. In schools, it was once called academic freedom, but now seems extinct. We live in a time now when too many—whether jihadists, or gay-bashers, or hate-speech opponents—want to tell others how to live and think. A little bit of live-and-let-live goes a long way, but it is surprisingly difficult to find.
And so, it is not surprising that those who understand and respect their differences (what makes us strong) can unite in the defense of the right to have those differences (what makes us stronger).
