Nuremberg Notions: Are We Entirely Devoid Of Historical Knowledge?
Business offers 15 percent raise to workers who will get a tattoo of the company logo.
I believe the slogan "Arbeit Macht Frei" is also available.

There are all sorts of unpleasant historical associations with many cultural practices.
The word negro is apparently now forbidden, even in a Spanish language context because of the cultural connotations in the US.
Tattoos in my opinion, are tacky and low class, but to most people they have as little association with Nazi Germany as Mercedes Benz, and BMW.

Actually I think the work-camp association is appropriate here.
You're tattooed with your owner's mark to show your love of your owner.
You're hoping for a sop, a minor favor from your owners for marking your body as their property. That 15% could easily be paid you WITHOUT this permanent defacement of your body.
People who do this to themselves are the folks who in Orwell's novels embraced their own abuse.
iberty? Too scary and dangerous. Servitude? Mmmmm. Yummy gruel for me and you, private jets for our owners.
We don't need socialism to make things right. We need balls.

+15% is a generous offer. And with today's laser removal, it is quick, painless and done in minutes.
Sad German reference, btw.

So, some knucklehead having his body mangled for a 15 percent raise is now evocative of being forced to have a tattoo in a place where you could literally smell burning human flesh from the ovens??? Puh-leeeeeze!
Nice invocation of Godwin's law, by the way.
mpetrie98 at May 28, 2013 11:48 AM
Comparing this to Nazism is silly. No one is being marched to the ovens for refusing, and it can be removed easily.

Yeah, that was just... there's no connection there.
Death camps with forced inventory tattoos so they'd know you got properly murdered.
A company offering you a raise for voluntarily being living advertising.
The only similarity is that "there is a tattoo involved".
It's a stupid idea, but the analogy is ... just as stupid.

I wouldn't do it for a pay raise.
But there are any number of people running around with tats like "USMC", "Ranger", a trident, etc. Do you condemn any of them? And they didn't get a pay raise.

No tats here, but Marine or Ranger is an accomplishment. It's really not much different from a class ring from "famous college." Or your fancy car or McMansion.
I settled for the T shirt. I knew a few Marines who got into the import-export business in Japan and ended up doing several years of very hard time. I'm pretty sure they were happy to have skipped the tattoos as well. Life is funny that way.
