Demonizing The Other Side
A tweet I retweeted:

Calling Michelle Obama "Moochelle" just bc you hate her politics is stupid, childish, and annoying. Stop it! Holy heck. #headdesk
My tweet in response:
@amyalkon
@bmorrett @blackrepublican Hear, hear. I hate this sort of thing. Also, like her/agree with her or not, she's pretty and stylish & not fat!
My tweet from that morning:
@amyalkon
@kyle_eubank @hugoschwyzer @instapundit Both liberals and conservatives have failings. I'm looking at the individual.
The tweet I was responding to:
@kyle_eubank
So, situation normal for a liberal. @amyalkon @hugoschwyzer @instapundit
If you can't respond to people you have political differences with without name-calling ("Fatty, fatty, two by four...") somebody made a mistake by letting you out of fourth grade.

When it comes to comments like that, I prefer to say things like, "And yet, Michelle Obama will probably always have more money than you, and even her detractors will be far more interested in her opinions than yours. But that comes with celebrity. So,spite away. She's immune to you."
Patrick at August 13, 2013 4:34 AM
Stylish, perhaps, but not pretty IMO. I don't like her. But I don't name call her or Obama. It's pointless and just detracts from legitimate complaints against them.
Hubby refers to her as the Klingon in private. I think he's got a point there.

Patrick at August 13, 2013 6:17 AM
I generally try to avoid political name-calling, but when I do engage in it, I don't waste my time with cutesy verbal slaps on the wrist. I go straight for the hard stuff. Seriously, name-calling is red meat for the tribe. It gets the base fired up, but it does nothing to advance the debate.
That said... Michelle Obama does travel a lot like a Hollywood A-list celebrity, going to exotic foreign destinations with a huge entourage. And you and I are paying for it.

And that right there disgusts me just as much as, if not more than, all the rest.
Flynne at August 13, 2013 7:05 AM
I'm going to keep this in my back pocket, for the next time some politician drops "tea bagger".
Or I'll just accuse them of homophobia.

It would be one thing if the economy was roaring along, and there were no deficits. But we're spending upwards of 8 figures to send this delicate little flower on vacation with her buddies while the rest of us are cutting back, or are unemployed, or have permanently left the job market.
I R A Darth Aggie at August 13, 2013 7:23 AM
I also vote that we retire "sheeple." It's not clever. You didn't think of it. You're just following along...well, like a sheep.
MonicaP at August 13, 2013 8:58 AM
Hypocrisy? I don't call her names. Hubby does. Where's the hypocrisy Oh Patrick The Great?
momof4 at August 13, 2013 9:44 AM
I will stop calling the President and first lady (and the rest of the democratic party) names, like "clueless, math impaired Philistines ", when they stop calling me a gun nut, and a racist.
Civil discourse should start with the people in power, not the other way around.
Isab at August 13, 2013 9:50 AM

You need to divorce him to cleanse your soul of his sin.

M4: "Hypocrisy? I don't call her names. Hubby does. Where's the hypocrisy Oh Patrick The Great?"
Perhaps you missed the part where I quoted? Let me add some emphasis and see if you catch on.
M4: "...I don't name call her or Obama..."
"...Hubby refers to her as the Klingon in private. I think he's got a point there."
See it now? You claim not to call her names, but you introduced your husband's name-calling into the discussion, which makes your claim dubious enough.
"Oh, I don't call her name, but my husband calls her this in private!"
Then you basically put the nail in the coffin when you said, "I think he's got a point there."
"Oh, I don't call her names, but my husband does, and I agree when he calls her this!"
I also love the smell of hypocrisy in the afternoon.
Patrick at August 13, 2013 11:01 AM
Normally, I would agree Amy; but, not in this case. I cannot remember any other President in my life who engaged in name calling himself. They usually had others do it for them. But Barry is so full of himself that he wants to do it himself.
So, when, not just his supporters, but the mighty O himself stops with the belittling comments directed at us bitter-clinging, acting-stupidly, hoodie hating, typical white people (and give the finger to Hillary) then I'll say that name calling isn't nice.
But, he is a Chicago-style politician and a leopard doesn't change his spots. So, nope, I don't agree with you this time.
Oh, and BTW, Michelle is a big fat mooch! The name calling in her case fits very well. Let her eat argula bought with her own dime, not mine.

The response for a lot of people seems to be, "But Mommmmmm! He called me a poopy-head first!"
We can all choose to be adults even when the other side is being childish. I can't control what others do, but I can control myself.
I've always hated "tea-bagger" and "Dubya." As much as I hate "libtard" and "Barry." These words never improve the level of discourse.

Apparently, you are mostly used to dealing with kindergarteners
Politics has always been a vicious dirty game. You should read some of the stuff that was said about candidates, and elected officials in the 19th century.
I admire a creative insult. That said, most of the insults you hear now, are not particularly clever or witty. Moochelle, is actually more clever than most.
It is troubling that Obama wants to have it both ways. He and his family are immune, while he, his party, and the lapdog press insult their opponents with impunity.
If you can't take the heat, get out of the fucking kitchen.
Isab at August 13, 2013 2:15 PM
"Michelle Obama does travel a lot like a Hollywood A-list celebrity, going to exotic foreign destinations with a huge entourage"
As opposed to every other First Lady? What about the last Prez? Didn't he take the most vacays outta anyone?
Michelle Obama buys clothes that I see upper middle class women buy ALL the time. I think she's very stylish and pretty.
I don't see her spending habits as extraordinary, because they are not. If you think they are, then you do not understand the clothing market.
(One of the designers she liked, started designing for Target because of her.)
If you want her buying from Walmart, or Zara or Marshall's please understand that is what is called "fast fashion" aka most of it is ripped off from other designers. The ethics of $79 shoes we buy are many times questionable. Once you get to $350 shoes you are barely starting in the "safe zone".
She prefers independent designers or....upper middle class stuff.
Most female politicians wear St.Johns (which is super expensive) and Jackie-O got her stuff designed personally by GIVENCHY.
I don't know of any politician with her sense of style keeping her price range moderate.

Oh please Repubs do the exact same thing with impunity.

Ppen, why do you always defend Obama? Why can't you be objective?
Not that I think you're an Obama defender, and I think you manage to be quite objective. Just preparing you for what's to come.
They criticize Obama for anything and everything, but when you point out Bush did the same thing, you're an Obama defender.

MonicaP: I've always hated "tea-bagger" and "Dubya." As much as I hate "libtard" and "Barry." These words never improve the level of discourse.
I've always thought of Barry and Dubya as harmless nicknames, particularly since the President has used the name Barry in the past.
I agree with "tea-bagger" and "libtard." It is true that some members of the Tea Party have identified themselves as "tea-baggers," but they were more or less tricked into it, not knowing the sexual connotation.
"Libtard" is especially offensive, because it degrades the mentally retarded, who don't owe their condition to any fault of their own.
Patrick at August 13, 2013 4:19 PM
Hmm. Patrick thinks being called a Klingon is pejorative. Well, maybe. I should wait for him to explain it to someone.
But Klingons are the honorable fighters in the Star Trek universe, who can be killed, but not defeated otherwise.
If you weren't a racist, Patrick, you would know that.

Which highlights how pathetic the insults are. I might admire a clever insult if I ever heard one. I don't want to hear the political equivalent of yo-momma jokes. I want to know how these people plan to create jobs and handle environmental issues.
MonicaP at August 13, 2013 4:40 PM
It bothers me that anyone would think the clothes that she wears to events is her "style".
I only assume she has more than one stylist, advising her in what to wear or not to wear.
I can't say that I like her "style" because I don't think I've ever seen it.

Well I certainly wouldnt want to subject someone of your obviously refined tastes to hearing anything that isnt witty or clever. The world certainly owes you that.....
And you differ from me then. I have never met a politician who could "create jobs" other than the make work, socialist do nothing crap, half the government employees are engaged in.
This can't continue. We are funding these make work jobs with borrowed money.
As far as the environment is concerned, What do you think we ought to be doing that hasn't already been done?
Shut down the electricity producing coal plants, so you can heat and light your house with composed junk mail?
Isab at August 13, 2013 5:11 PM
"I can't say that I like her "style" because I don't think I've ever seen it."
I love the ignorance on how style & fashion work.
Prominent people have their own style but still require a stylist. Has there been a fashion icon you like Cat? Because they probably still had a stylist.
A stylist exists for several reasons, but their most important job is understanding their clients personal taste.
She has a stylist for the same reason she has a chauffeur (I'm sure she knows how to drive herself).
Stylists know 1. What photographs well 2. What won't cause controversy 3. Background behind designers (acting as a barrier between the client & sales people). 4. Time management
Most importantly of all they present several pieces of clothing to the client, who then decides based their style.
Michelle is known for hand picking independent designers-which is very rare.
Ppen at August 13, 2013 8:30 PM
"she's pretty and stylish & not fat!"
I don't think she is pretty.
I prefer jeans and t-shirts on women. That is my style.
She is probably just big boned.
Dave B at August 13, 2013 11:17 PM
"I've always thought of Barry and Dubya as harmless nicknames, particularly since the President has used the name Barry in the past."
True. We've been nicknaming Presidents since the '60s. JFK was Jack; Richard Nixon was Dick; Gerald Ford was Jerry; Ronald Reagan was Ronnie. George H. Bush was... well, George. Bill Clinton brought the process full circle by using "Bill" himself, long before he became President. Barry is just a familiar form for Barack, particularly, as someone up-thread pointed out, that he's used that name himself in the past.
Cousin Dave at August 14, 2013 7:46 AM

I know! I think so too!
People can say what they please. I am free to think they're asinine as I please.
Re: Environment and job growth. I don't care to go off on a tangent here. What I mean is, I want to hear about the stuff the American people hired them to do, not be distracted by dissing contests.
And I've nver heard Dubya and Barry used affectionately. It's always someone with a grudge against the president. And that's fine. People can enjoy themselves. But again, it's childish.
MonicaP at August 14, 2013 7:56 AM
They criticize Obama for anything and everything, but when you point out Bush did the same thing, you're an Obama defender.
No, Patrick people call you an Obama supporter because
A)you say Bush is worse, even though Obama is objectively worse when it comes to money spent/rights violate/lives lost/government overthrown in all the categories people say they hate Bush for
B) you refuse to say in what other manner he might possibly be worse
lujlp at August 14, 2013 8:23 AM
Be careful, Luj! You may be entering super duper condemnation and isolation territory from Patrick. Let's all be "Vewwy, Vewwy Qwiet" so as to not set Patrick off on another "I WEALLY WEALLY HATE that WASCALLY BUSH" rant.

crella at August 14, 2013 5:47 PM
"You want to translate that?"
If I were someone else, I'd say I could, but wouldn't, because it's YOUR fault if you don't "get it".
However, I'm me. Translation: Patrick thinks that calling the First Lady a Klingon, if you are not the President, is bad.
It's not. The chief Klingon in the Star Trek canon is played by Michael Dorn, a black man who is highly respected for his characterization of Klingons as honor-bound in the extreme.
Maybe that's a quality to despise. It really isn't politically correct.
But a Klingon is a good thing to be. Calling someone out for calling someone else a Klingon is backwards.
