I Don't Often Read Novels But This One I Loved
I mostly read science -- books, papers -- but when we were going to Paris the last time, I needed a book and Gregg picked one out for me in the airport. (Gregg was the late Elmore Leonard's researcher of 30-plus years, and has a way with knowing what to read.)
The book is The Book Thief, and I loved it. It's supposed to be YA fiction but sure doesn't read like it.
I just saw they've made it into a movie. I'll see that but I highly recommend the book.

What an interesting set of prices (which is me being somewhat stunned and pleased with the kindle price.)
Hardcover: $15.36
Paperback: $7.35
Kindle: $2.90
I bought almost no books for kindle when the books were sold at the same price points as hardcovers and paperbacks.
$2.90 should bring in tons more sales.

Jerry, thanks for that tip. I need to read for my book club and was having hard time getting at library. I just bought the kindle edition. And with Amy's endorsement I'm eager to read it.

I do not possess the words that do justice to this book. This book touched my soul. Another top notch recommendation from Amy. I hadn't read a novel since college (long time ago) and this book could get missed by being YA fiction.
I only hope the movie does it some justice.

Surprisingly, in the last several years YA fiction has been getting pretty awesome (and NO, I am NOT talking about Twilight. That books should be used to teach how NOT to write).

I only hope the movie does it some justice.
From hence forth all movies derived from book shall be judged on the "Narnian Scale" which I invented
Level 1 LW&W
Overall story arc adhered to
Basic story intact
Story chronology intact
Certain scenes cut, mainly dialogue and exposition
Some scenes, collapsed into each other and expanded, combat
About as good as you can get given the inherent challenges translating it to film.
Level 2 PC
Overall story arc similar to book, but a bit off
Basic story intact though barely
Story chronology no longer intact
Many scenes cut, mainly dialogue, exposition, & most side stories
Many scenes collapsed into each other and expanded, combat
Some scenes morphed in to polar opposites of the books description
One or two major sub plot dropped entirely
One or two major sub plots tweaked significantly
It could have been better, it could have had some of the major sub plots left in. But ultimately the ball was dropped
Level 3 VotDT
Overall story arc ignored
Basic story entirely rewritten
Story chronology no longer important as the story in the movie is not the one from the book
Many scenes cut, mainly dialogue, exposition, & all side stories
Many scenes collapsed into each other and expanded, combat
Many scenes morphed in to polar opposites of the books description
Nearly every major sub plot dropped entirely
Things that never existed at all in the book written in to the movie
Basically a flaming pile of shit that makes you wish it were legal to kill the cast and crew and force their family the eat their loved ones corpses
