Spare a thought (or a prayer) for the Philippines. Super Typhoon Haiyan is apparently the strongest on record ever to hit the island nation.
From what I understand, the storm should pass through the Philippines over the weekend, but it looks like Vietnam is next to get hit.

I can't post the link, but here's some useful information.
If you make 50K per year, you pay:
247.75 for defense
3.98 for FEMA
22.88 for unemployment insurance
36.82 for SNAP
6.96 for welfare
43.78 for government pensions, both civilian and military
235.81 for Medicare
4,000 for corporate subsidies.

Old RPM Daddy; I haven't seen anything in the news about this; But, if Bush were still President the US 7th Fleet would be preparing to assist the Philippines in the aftermath of that storm. But, since we have the too-busy-golfing-playing-hoops-slackard in the Oval Office now I suspect that the 7th fleet will be doing nothing to help an ally in their time of need.

Oh, I suspect we'll be sending some help out there. While the storm is raging, there's not much dramatic that can be done. We'll know more over the next few days.

Spaeking of fires
Police taze an man, cuff him, taze him again, throw him in a squad car, taze him a third time, and arrest him to stop him from trying to save his son from a burning house.
They also threatened to arrest his wife and mother for daring to be upset.
Luckily I live in Idaho where everyone has been most professional.

Old RPM Daddy; yes, photo number 9 is quite interesting. For 2 reasons; first, that storm is covering the entire island chain of the Philippines - wow! And secondly, look at the lights of cities; especially how South Korea is all lit up and North Korea is totally dark. The same with Bangkok and its neighbors, albeit to a lesser extent than the Koreas.
Lujlp; those cops are complete assholes! I could see holding a man back from rushing into a fire that will, no doubt, kill him. But, to taze him? That's beyond speechless. I hope that family sues and wins big - it won't bring their kid back but it will tell the cops that they showed "poor judgment."

Eric, I'm so sorry.
A dear friend of mine, a woman, is now dealing with something similar.
The inability of the child services people to parse the nuances of normal parental discipline and abuse is shocking, especially since cases of real abuse are in the news with some frequency -- going unpunished, that is, until the child ends up injured or dead. (At which point the buck is passed with some ferocity.)

Oh, and for those who don't know Eric, the guy is a great dad -- the kind of dad you'd petition to have as a parent. He has an adopted son who is so lucky to have him and that's how he feels about his son.
Thanks so much Amy. I have been lucky because those I have dealt with are impartial. But I have learned so much in the past two years about others that fell on the mercy of some official's bad judgement.

Here are some pictures of the storm in the Philippines. Pay particular attention to Photo Number 9, taken from a satellite in geosynchronous orbit.

As someone whose psychotic ex-wife pulls this kind of crap on a weekly basis, this story hit close to home:
