Obamacare Forces Vending Machines Companies To List Calorie Counts
This will only cost them, oh, $25 million or so -- a cost which will be passed on to the people buying food out of vending machines. If you really want to know the calories in a Snickers bar, can't you look the info up on your damn phone?
(warning -- autoplay video at link.)
And while we're on the topic, stop by here at December 30, 2013 11:36 PM.

If you cared about calories, you wouldn't be eating a Snickers bar. If you care about being annoyed by do-gooders, there is no escape in this country.

And do they have to list the total calories, or calories per serving? That little bag of Cheetos has four servings.

If you are really that concerned with calories or food content then why, for crying out loud, are you buying food from a vending machine? Last I checked vending machines weren't exactly known for vending "healthy" snacks.

And, let's see... where on the machine are we going to put all that signage for 40 or so different products?

Isn't that information already on the package?
MSDS sheets kept in the office manager's office?
You know that thing where people petition the office manager to have new foods put in the vending machines because they're tired of the existing selection? Kiss that goodbye as the vending machine operator can't risk the liability of not being able to add the nutrition information for any new items.

Obamacare assumes people would live healthy lives if only Big Candy would stop suppressing the sale of healthy foods - as if M&M Mars has been hiding vegetables from us.
People choose to eat a Snickers Bar - and some people choose to eat 10 or 12 of them. Why am I expected to share the costs for that guy's obesity and diabetes?
Insurance is supposed to be pooled risk. The government's idea of pooled risk is a chicken pox party where everyone comes away infected.
What the Obamacare advocates don't seem to understand (or choose to willfully ignore) is that be pooling the long-term costs of living an unhealthy lifestyle - your obesity is now our problem - the problem is only going to get worse.
Just look at welfare. When the government mitigated the risks and consequences of having a child out of wedlock with government support for single mothers, single motherhood among the poor skyrocketed. And we're all paying the price for it.

Kaiser has already started doing something similar in some of their locations here. The soda machines only sell diet or water so there is a sticker on it that says all items are under 5 calories per serving and the snack machine has baked potato chips, granola bars, peanuts, etc. and has a sticker saying all snacks are under 200 calories.
BunnyGirl at December 31, 2013 10:56 AM
What problem do they hope this will solve? Does anyone really need to know the number of calories listed on a bag of potato chips to realize that it's not the healthiest choice to make?
Besides, there are many healthy foods that are high in calories that are quite healthy.
