Gun-Toting Woman Goes Out To Rescue A Man Beaten By A Mob
Steve Utah, a white man, accidentally clipped a kid with his truck when the boy, 10, ran out into the street. A mob of black people set upon him and beat him. A gun-toting retired nurse, Deborah Hughes, who is black, grabbed her gun and ran out to protect the man.
Deborah Hastings reports in the New York Daily News:
She got her gun, she ran into the street, and she threw herself on top of a white man being beaten by a mob of black men."He was a man. He wasn't white. He was a man. And I was ready to shoot anybody who hit that man again," retired nurse Deborah Hughes told FOX2 News in Detroit.
Nine days after he was beaten by the mob, Utash awoke from a coma, but is not back to normal. The boy whom he hit suffered a minor leg injury.
Charlie LeDuff reports for Fox Detroit:

The older I get, the more I admire a woman who packs a rod. Who totes a heater. Who can care for herself.

Good for her!
And, yea, isn't it funny how they are all trying so hard to avoid directly saying that his beating was because of his race.
Thanks, Obama!

No word yet from the White House if Wozney or Deontae could have been the President's sons.

Somehow the single back guy they interviewed it called it rage.
But I'm sure there has been more than one kid hit while jaywalking where the driver stopped and wasn't beaten on, regardless of race or ethnicity.
So somehow I just can't let this slide on down the rails without remembering it.

I'm glad you posted this article. I read this same story earlier today, but no where did it mention she had a gun or planned on using it - just "threw herself on top of him to protect him." I was curious as to who jumping on top of a guy getting beat stops the beating. "...and now you know the rest of the story."

Three people have since been charged with assault. A teenage boy was also charged with a hate crime Thursday in the mob attack captured by surveillance video. Utash was also robbed.
Should we be uplifted because someone intervened? Or should we be downcast because we live in a society where mobs of Black men are beating people?

Doom, I vote both. I'm also curious to see how the prosecution goes, considering how rare it is for anyone who isn't a white male to be charged under hate-crime laws. (And even if he's convicted, it won't change my opinion that hate-crime laws are a terrible idea.)
