#BringBackOurGirls (But Never Mind The Boys)
Atane Ofiaja writes at Policy Mic that "#BringBackOurGirls Misses the Real Story About What's Happening to Nigeria's Boys":
Boko Haram has been killing schoolboys in huge numbers for quite some time now. The group is not just trying to bar young girls from "Western education" -- they don't want anyone to get a "Western education."Back in February, Boko Haram killed 59 schoolboys between the ages of 11 and 18. Last September, they killed 50 young men between 18 and 22 as they slept in their dorms. Last June, they killed 60 schoolboys between the ages of 10 and 16. Schools have been their targets for the last year, and the boys are not spared.
Noah Rothman asks at MediaIte, "Why Did Kidnapping Girls, but Not Burning Boys Alive, Wake Media Up to Boko Haram?"
On February 25, between 40 and 59 children were killed by the fundamentalist militant group. Early that morning, Boko Haram terrorists attacked a boarding school and shot many of children, aged 11 to 18, while they slept. Some of the students were gunned down as they attempted to flee. Others had their throats slit. In some buildings, Boko Haram militants locked the doors and set the building alight. The occupants were burned alive. All of the victims were boys. Reports indicated that the young girls the militants encountered were spared. According to the BBC, the militants told the girls to flee, get married, and shun the western education to which they were privy.
Beyond wire reports and a handful of segments on globally-focused outlets like NPR, this atrocity went unremarked upon in the popular news media.
...An even more disturbing question needs to be asked now: why did the press spring to action when young women were kidnapped, but were virtually unmoved when it was young boys who were being slaughtered and burned alive?

Apparently happening as recently as this week too.
Reports: Boko Haram village raids kill hundreds in Nigeria
http://www.cnn.com/2014/06/05/world/africa/boko-haram-village-raids/index.html
Sounds like hundreds were killed, but they did single out men and boys.
"The attackers, who posed as soldiers, told residents they had come to protect them from Boko Haram and asked them to assemble. They singled out men and boys and opened fire on them, Biye said.
A local leader in Attagara village, who fled to nearby Madagali town in neighboring Adamawa state, said the death toll was staggering.
"The death is unimaginable. We have lost between 400 and 500 people in the attacks in which men and male children were not spared," said the local leader, who asked not to be named for security reasons."

Eggs are expensive; sperm are cheap.

I immediately thought of the evolutionary angle on this, Snoopy, but it's really that women can be impregnated and pass on the line of the rapists. Men have no value on that level and, in fact, are a danger and potential foil to that goal.

It seems the story of the kidnapped girls has faded from the media's attention. Like so many other things. A 3-5 day news story at best. A shame.
Nick at June 8, 2014 11:30 AM
The American media, maybe.
If any of the girls are RESCUED (as opposed to a few more escaping), I expect the American media will take note.
lenona at June 8, 2014 11:46 AM
In the progressive, politically correct mind, whether or not such atrocities are worthy of attention depends not on the nature and magnitude of the atrocities themselves, but on who the victims and perpetrators are.

Well... Ok.
I know what you mean.
But who exactly did you want to go in there to solve this problem?
The flat, irrefutable truth is that there's precisely one nation on the planet with the logistical resources, contemporary decency, and violent powers to liberate those girls, or at least punish their enslaving miscreants. That nation is the United States.
Why should poor Hispanic kids from East L.A. always give their lives when the rest of the 'modern' world gets all pouty about typically primitive behavior in the Third World?
Wouldn't it just be amazeballs/faboo if the nations of Europe, individually or in concert, could actually reach into the darkness for just ONE of these stories to deliver a good outcome, without leadership or sacrifice by the United States? Wouldn't that be grand?

This. It was just an excuse for hashtag activism by the glitterati. They've moved on.
"But who exactly did you want to go in there to solve this problem?"
To put the matter a bit more bluntly: There is one and only one solution to the immediate problem, and that's to send the U.S. Army over there to shoot the mofos. Who wants to go there? I thought not. And yes, I understand the reasons why not. Still, the comment stands.

meh, everyone stood aside when they slaughtered MILLIONS in Darfur, what's a couple hundred girls? Oh, yeah YET another elite rallying cry for all correct minded people to get together over drinks and hashtags.
After the CF that is Libya "or at least punish their enslaving miscreants." I doubt that they are even afraid, because they know that we'll be bogged down in niceties, and hamstrung by stupid ROE's
More to the point, the killing or enslavement of boys in africa has been going on long enough that there is prolly not much to be done. If there was a country to help get everything straightened out, it needs to be in africa, and none of them are capable.

Most of you are focusing on the pointlessness of even reporting the girls story. But the reality is the western world doesn't value men.
-Male educational achievement is down and dropping. But all you read about is women's educational problems.
-Men are less than 33% of collage students and dropping.
-Female labor participation is back where is was before the recession, but male labor participation continues to lag.
-Most suicide prevention is aimed at women. But men are 3-10 times more likely to die from suicide.
I half expect someone to call me a whiner for bringing things like this up. I'm just pointing out that none of this makes the news.
Another funny one feminist complain about is that for all ages men's median wealth is higher than women's. Slate and others have called for government to end this oppression by the patriarchy. But 5 year olds don't earn an income. So how are 5 year old males richer than 5 year old females? Men have a higher rate of death at all ages. And poor people also have a higher rate of death. So boys in wealthy families survive while boys in poor families dies. No patriarchy needed.
