Chasing The Boys
It's better if the boys are chasing you, but I never did make varsity.
Someone on Twitter just reminded me of a photo I dug up and sent to the Free Press that they didn't use in Patricia Montemurri's big features section story on me and on "Good Manners for Nice People Who Sometimes Say F*ck." I was on boys cross country in junior high. Because...because...that's where the boys were!
P.S. The wind was blowing. My hair was not *that* big!
Power blog post. Calls to mind the tweet from Burge earlier in the week.

Christ, the 70's were a hairy time.

Miss Alkon, except for the purple shirts, that could have been my junior high, but then we were only a few hours south of you.
For the record, my hair in 1979 was vaguely like Dude Number 3's in the front row. But I wasn't on the cross-country team. I was in the Dorkestra.

Amy, You look more like a "Viking" than the rest of them. :-)

That guy looked a lot like one of my roommates.
Mom, to one of those purple-shirted dudes: "You know, you might win one of those races if you didn't spend all your time looking at that Alkon girl!"
Blushing purple-shirted dude: "Aw, Mommmmmmmm!"

It's funny, I can look at pictures of myself when I was in grade school and not cringe. I had that common, generic cuteness almost all kids at that age have.
I can look at pictures of me and my yearbooks from senior high school and not cringe. I can just about see the adult I grew into, especially in appearance.
However, pictures of me and my junior high school yearbooks? I cannot look at them. I can't believe how doofy looking I was. I don't know about anybody else but I certainly didn't do myself proud, looks-wise, in that transition from little kid to teenager. Just blame it on puberty, I guess.
(Amy, great hair.)

This is why I like red hair. Awesome hair, Amy.
