The First Amendment Is There To Protect Assholes, Not People Who Go Around Saying "Have A Nice Day!"
The same goes for the rule of law and city codes rather than the rule of bullies.
But, per links from Walter Olson, the Mayor of Boston has come out as a business suit-wearing thug.
The blogger at Coyote Blog, who picked up Walter's link, notes that the Boston Mayor's announcement -- that Donald Trump will never get permits in Boston -- shows how corrupted business licensing is by politics:
Boston mayor says Trump will never get any city permits because of his political views. If Donald Trump ever wants to build a hotel in Boston, he'll need to apologize for his comments about Mexican immigrants first, the Hub's mayor said."I just don't agree with him at all," Boston Mayor Martin J. Walsh told the Herald yesterday. "I think his comments are inappropriate. And if he wanted to build a hotel here, he'd have to make some apologies to people in this country."
Olson adds:
And no, I'm not exactly thrilled with Mayor Walsh for making me take Trump's side in an argument.
More from Olson:
P.S. Now the NYC sequel, from Mayor Bill de Blasio: no more city contracts for the guy with the wrong opinions [The Hill]
These Mayors seem under the impression they were coronated, not elected.
And no, I don't care if the guy said we should feel babies to the squirrels, piece by piece. If he meets the fiscal and other standards imposed by law to get contracts, he should get contracts.
Also, I'd vote for my desk before I voted for Donald Trump. And no, I'm not kidding.

But what's your desks' opinion on the Iran policy?
So this mayor has admitted in public to planning a crime. Unfortunately I doubt anyone would arrest him for it.

If Trump were smart he'd file for permit, and then when denied file massive civil lawsuits against those municipalities for violating his civil rights

This is the problem with 'discretion' in government. When people choose who to associate with it is fine, you have alternatives. But when government can do that all you end up with is corruption.
Ben at July 23, 2015 5:39 AM
In general 'deese guys and their governments are already corrupt due to their licensing/fee requirements.
If New Yorkers all went to the inner city areas where Yellow cab doesn't go and then failed to show up at work (1 day) because the cabs won't go there the current 'policies' (and fight against Uber) would end the next day.
But who has the time.

I blame the voters! (in addition to the idiotic politicians)
These statements aren't much different from the ones made by Rahm Emanuel (mayor of Chicago) about Chick-fil-a.
And, even after making such idiotic statements, Emanuel got re-elected (okay, it involved a run-off; but, still he won).
I'd be willing to bet that these idiots will get re-elected too.
Free speech for me; but, not for thee! seems to be the motto for too many today.
charles at July 23, 2015 7:17 AM
You have 2 choices if you can not relocate:
1. Get involved, get loud, vote; and
2. Do not do the above and let others decide what you deserve.
One choice MIGHT change the outcome (better odds if you are smart about it and the #blacklivesmatter are not being smart at all).
One has no chance in hell of changing anything.
Bob in Texas at July 23, 2015 7:45 AM
If that scenario were to play out, it sounds to me like a bigger loss for Boston than for Trump.

It's disturbing how many people think there's nothing wrong with that statement. How many people don't recognize that kind of statement as the beginning of a slide into totalitarianism.
Conan the Grammarian at July 23, 2015 10:36 AM
all this does is to reinforce something I learned about being in business in Chicago.
It doesn't matter how you vote... you are a democrat when they ask... and oh, yeah you'll donate to the teamsters union softball league. And you ALWAYS donate to the Police Athletic League. Make sure you display their decal prominently in your car too.
You never know when that slight additional weight might help you.
:very level look:
If you live in a big city, you learn a few things.

Amy Alkon: "I'd vote for my desk before I voted for Donald Trump."
I tend to think like that too. But with Democrats and Republicans both hating on him, I'm kind of starting to like him.
Ken R at July 23, 2015 12:13 PM
Amy's bluffing. She hasn't seen her desk for months, maybe years...
Americans absolutely, positively WILL NOT vote for a businessman, because they have been conditioned to think they should vote for the bozo with the most in common with them.
And if that doesn't work, it's always "somebody else's fault".

Trump was in Laredo today, and the area's state senator, Judith Zaffirini,(a Democrat) had an intelligent, if slightly snarky, response to the visit:
"...Trump loves to talk about his money, and I hope he'll spend some of it while he's in town. He clearly has cash to burn, and anyone will tell you that Laredo's booming economy offers a far better return on investment than a doomed presidential campaign.
Trump could visit the local chamber of commerce to learn about business opportunities, attend a Laredo Lemurs baseball game, hit the links at one of our fabulous golf courses or enjoy our city, many wonderful opportunities for dining and shopping. He might even be able to get a good deal on a Donald-Trump-Pinata..."

Conan: "It's disturbing how many people think there's nothing wrong with that statement."
Exactly! I can't remember who said it, although I'm pretty sure I read it from one of Amy's commenters here. It went something like this:
The problem with totalitarianism is that everyone thinks it will only restrict others; not them.
So, again, I blame the voters because they really do not see anything wrong with such a statement. And even more disturbing is that many actually cheer such nonsense.
charles at July 23, 2015 2:26 PM

Does she also dress like a fortune teller ahw?
Dave B at July 23, 2015 3:37 PM
No, Dave B, she dresses like a witch. But that's a whole 'nother topic.
I like how Trump is pretending that he's risking his life to visit the US side of the border regions. He wouldn't shut up about how dangerous this trip was. Like he's going to Somalia or something. I don't think he even crossed onto the Mexican side, where he might be mobbed by children trying to sell him chiclets and pick his pockets.
ahw at July 24, 2015 7:45 AM
Nobody in the media is stopping to ask themselves why the Trump phenomonen is happening, just as they aren't asking why the Bernie Sanders phenomonen is happening. (After all, they are both clearly unskilled at campaigning.) In both cases, it's because people feel like (with good justification) they are being ignored by the party leaders. Democrats figure the fix is in for Hillary, and Republicans fully expect their party to somehow produce another Bob Dole. Yeah, it's populism, but when the government turns elitist, populism might be the only possible correcting force.

Boston mayor says Trump will never get any city permits because of his political views.
Which implies that there are others who are getting city permits and probably other lucrative benefits because of their political views.
