Thomas Sowell is retiring from public writing at age 86. He is a plain-spoken, brilliant economist who examined why one group does well compared to other groups, among many other things.
The above link lists some of his observations, not long and well worth a review.
Sowell caught my attention long ago just after college. Sowell observed of the 1960's that some Vietnamese immigrant groups experienced poverty after coming to America, and other groups quickly became well-off and even rich. He noted that the poor ones came from rural Vietnam, and the rich ones came from the cities. Sowell explained that the poor ones did not have a culture of inventiveness and business formation, while the rich ones had hundreds of years of city culture.
His golden insight was this: Racists and bigots certainly did not have the interest or ability to pick out the city from the country Vietnamese. Racists would react equally to both groups. So, racism could not be a significant factor in how those Vietnamese groups prospered in the US.
I found the difference between male Clinton supporters and female supporters staggering.
Add'l only 1 female comment about the lack of Clinton addressing the issues people were really concerned about (anything other than how awful Trump was or how great Clinton was).
And these were Clinton voters commenting. Amazing different perspectives. Mars vs. Venus I guess.

LOL! I think this guys' buds are probably going to celebrate his departure from the tennis courts. I mean don't any of deese guys cringe even a little bit at the Clinton history or the DNC's treatment of Sanders?
I understand progressive's cold hard look at their "facts" and respect them, but "moral compass" and "Clinton" being considered the same is a stretch.

What I loved most in the Kos piece is the outrage at the alleged anti-Semitic taunting some kids got a local high school but the absolute dead silence about how Obama just threw the whole state of Israel under the bus as one of his last acts. Trump, or someone on his team, at least understands the long term impact of that Security Council vote and how it actually hurts millions of Jews. There is no sense of proportion, or reality with this crowd.
Six and Bob, good on you guys if you can stomach those comments. I read about 10 of them and then just had to walk away in disgust.

Terrific post by Eugene Volokh on University of Oregon killing free speech on campus & the wrong done to Prof Nancy Shurtz.
In related events, I seem to recall the Mark Foley scandal, in which he was sending lewd personal messages and emails to congressional pages, even after their tenure had ended and these pages were now in college.
I don't hear much about Foley these days, but I heard he's taken up reading. He doesn't use bookmarks, though. He just bends over pages.

Kerry is going to gibber on about something today. Current thought is that he's going to call for international recognition of a Palestinian state, and an additional call for a retreat to pre-1967 borders.
That's considered an "Auschwitz with an Ocean" by the Israelis. The wheels on the bus go round and round, round and round...

"Six-year-old Arkansas girl uses her sleeping mom's fingerprints to unlock iPhone and buy 13 Pokemon gifts on Amazon for a total of $250"
...Bethany was told that she was only allowed to return four of the items.
She broke the news to her daughter by telling her that she couldn’t keep all of the gifts because Santa Claus knew of how she had bought them in the first place.

Why did she allow her to keep any of them? What lesson does that teach her? I would have returned each one.
Midwest IT Guy, Midwest, 19 hours ago
From the article, it seems that the mom was only allowed to return 4 of the items. Still, my child would never have seen any of the toys. Probably donated to a local children's hospital.
Joshua_USA17, NYC, United States, 8 hours ago
BULL. If you can't return them then donate them and take her with you to the shelter.

Haven't seen "Shameless," or the UK show it's based on, but now I'm curious. Apparently, it shows what dirt poor people really have to do just to get by in the short term, unlike, maybe, characters on "Roseanne."
One commentator said poor people should stop smoking and eating fast food. Three responses to that:

"There's smoking giving you joy, but there's also smoking as stress relief. I'd quit smoking until recently, but then I got mugged. Since then I've been smoking like a fiend because I'm stressed from walking around feeling unsafe all the time. And I live in one of the safest neighborhoods in my city.
"So imagine the stress of living in a not-at-all safe neighborhood and feeling unsafe all the time (which is much more likely for poor folk), the stress of not knowing how the bills are going to get paid or where you're going to be living next month, the stress of working nonstop and never making ends meeting -- this is like 37 times the amount of stress I have from one unfortunate incident. So if I can't stop smoking like crazy just to try to calm my nerves for a few minutes, I can hardly imagine what it's like for people in less fortunate situations."
Special snowflake alert. Your procedures don't apply to meeeee! I'm surprised that this isn't a federal offense.
“We’ve learned she had blown past the gate agent, boarding unlawfully, refusing to properly check her bags and then refused to get up and leave the aircraft. All the while she was cursing at responding officers who begged her to walk out on her own,” reports ABC Detroit (WXYZ).
