I'm not sure I want to get "comfortable" having my life in the hands of someone not thinking clearly.
"As young people, we need to devote real energy to solving what are collective challenges. Until we do so, we should get comfortable with sporadic muggings and break-ins. I can hardly blame them. The cards are all in our hands, and we’re not playing them."
While there is plenty of hypocrisy to go around, Democrats’ newfound adoration of checks and balances simply isn’t credible. And once that trust has been eroded, it’s difficult to regain it. Most Americans aren’t impressed by procedure. So why would they surrender power when they’re certain you will abuse it again four years from now?
It's not that I disagree with SlateStarCodex first piece it's just that it doesn't sit right with me, especially considering he's supposed to be a psychiatrist.
He's talking about well known social phenomenon that's been discussed by neurologists, psychiatrists, and psychologist but his theories on why it happens are pulled out of his own ass instead of mentioning the other more prominent asses that have debated this topic since forever with data they've collected over the course of their studies.
I mean he's talks about "filtering" and how humans end up only hanging out with like minded individuals. The phenomenon is actually called clustering and it's even more complex and rigid than simply sharing similar beliefs, finances, race or religious beliefs.
Not disagreeing with him but I prefer other psychiatric dudes who discuss the topic.

Keep it coming. Nothing turns off people trying to make ends meet, handle personal crises, and deal with actual daily stress more than stuff like this. To have the college cave just ices the cake.
"After three days of occupation by students of Kerr Hall, Chancellor George Blumenthal agreed to give all black and Caribbean-identified students a 4-year housing guarantee to live in the Rosa Parks African American Themed House; bring back the building’s lounge; paint its exterior the “Pan-Afrikan colors” of red, green and black; and force all new incoming students to go through a mandatory diversity competency training."
> instead of mentioning the other
> more prominent asses
WTF? Only a select aristocracy is allowed to participate?...
> that have debated this topic since
> forever with data they've collected
> over the course of their studies
...And even if you're part of the aristocracy —and Codex' statistical powers are considerable— you're expected to remain silent on all personal insights and observations in all contexts?
Really don't see where you're going here, but am certain your bit about "clustering" would not impress.

"And even if you're part of the aristocracy —and Codex' statistical powers are considerable— you're expected to remain silent on all personal insights and observations in all contexts?"
That’s just it—I didn’t really find his personal insights all that considerable for a man who is a psychiatrist. My suspicion is that like most psychiatrists that are popular bloggers he is “OK” in his field but to an audience that isn’t used to being around psychiatrists his ideas sound really illuminating and unique because he is smart and an entertaining writer.
Look at his personal insight on filtering:
"Since starting working in psychiatry, I have realized that we also filter for misery. I think a big part of this is sorting by social class. But it’s in a more subtle way than you might think.’
He then gives 3 personal and very flimsy theories on why this filtering happens. And he doesn’t even explain to his audience what the phenomena is called in psychiatry—it’s called clustering and there are better theories than his own 3 on why it happens and why miserable people are excluded from our social circles and end up at the doorstep of doctors in such a prevalent manner. If I want to hear fun pop-pulled out my ass psychiatry I like what Gabor Mate has to say on the topic of misery myself, and I don’t agree with him on everything.
Sapolsky also discusses clustering in more biological concrete terms. There is more to it than social class, or "misery".
I don’t really have a point except that as someone who reads a shit ton of psychiatric stuff both popular and not and has been around a shit ton of psychiatrists as a patient this guy is meh to me.
What I am digging though is reading people breaking his views down.

Holy shit I have been around alot of psychiatrists.
His writings sounded like a young and inexperienced psychiatrist to me.
And wiking him he's 33 and a resident in training.
Those psychiatrists know shit at the point. I would never go to one that's that stage.

Haha holy shit i'm hating this guy.
He's defending Nefazodone over Seroquel? Thank god he's not my psychiatrist.
He also paints a false picture that psychiatrists don't use modafinil because of the risk of SJS....but in his excellent wisdom he manages to convince at least 1 doc to give it out. WTF is he talking about psychiatrists give out Lamictal like candy and that shit WILL give you SJS if you titrate too quickly. There are other reasons why moda isn't used and it has nothing to do with SJS.
Clozapine....oh clozapine.....
And the commentators are discussing that it should be a matter of free choice? When it comes to psychiatric meds?
hahahahahahaha.
Oh boy in a manic state I would be asking for nothing but NDRIs. Doc pump me up with Wellbutrin. "Sure thing, it is your free choice"

You are always making fun of Alkon for her ev-psychology stuff right? Waist hip ratio, all that jazz.
But as it turns out you have a huge admiration for a young inexperienced psychiatrist and you think he is brilliant and insightful. And you want to share the links of his wonderfulness.
And that bug up my ass, which has always been with me, needs to write long posts about it. Because that is what I always do on here. I do it with everyone.
It's what you do too, except you do it in better prose. Your stuff is more fun to read.
So nah I'm not cranked about auto mechanics. I'm cranked about silly newbie psychiatrists who think the reason more seasoned and experienced docs give out fat meds vs exploding liver meds is because of their piss poor understanding of stats. So I'm gonna use the space Alkon gives me to rant about it, because she's dope like that and has let me do it forever. I channel that bug up my ass. Where else can I do it?
What a disappointment to know this guy is super popular too. Reading more of his stuff has been very disturbing as an experienced patient. I could see young me thinking he was giving good medical advice. Fuuuuuuuckkk.
