Hooked On A Felon
My best friend's new boyfriend is a convicted sex offender who has three children from three different women. He has no job and pays no child support. I've tried in vain to convince her that he's a bad bet. They keep insisting we all go to dinner so I can "get to know" him. How do I explain that I want nothing to do with him without ruining our friendship?
--Uncomfortable
When your friend meets guys online, it shouldn't be on MegansLaw.com. Unfortunately, pointing this out to her is probably futile. We're slaves to our ego, determined to see ourselves as smart, lovable, and making wise choices, even if it takes believing the unbelievable: "Soulmate, inmate -- what's the difference?" What you don't have to do is accept their offer of a ringside seat. Instead, tell her you're happy she's happy but you'd prefer to spend time with her alone. Her knowing you disapprove of him may put a gash in your friendship, but it may be a smaller gash if you stop trying to convince her. This may mean you'll be around when she needs you most -- after things go south. Maybe you can at least keep her from immediately seeking his replacement, like by dolling herself up and lingering outside parole hearings: "Hey, handsome...didn't I see you on 'Law & Order: Special Victims Unit'?"

In the incipient stages of a relationship, those in love are notorious for missing a red flag or two. Then there's LW's friend, whose love interest has a hire a parade to carry all the red flags he's got.
Sex offender, no job, three children by three different women, none of which he supports. Hmmm... Maybe he's hung like a moose?
While most people, I would hope, are much more discerning than LW's friend, the advice is good and applicable to any concerned friend watching someone make a really bad choice.
You can't talk them out of it; just be there to help pick up the pieces.

It's a known fact that the same *qualities* that make top CEOs and politicians also make prison inmates-- they're sociopaths. As David D famously sez, "A woman does not FEEL ATTRACTION for a man who makes her THINK... A woman FEELS ATTRACTION for a man who makes her FEEL." My corollary says "It doesn't matter if the feeling is good or bad, it simply must BE." So many women have such dull lives, they don't know the difference.
LW should ask her friend what qualities she likes in a man. Chances are, she'll recite a shopping list that fails to begin with ATTRACTION. Like shopping for a car, and failing to say you expect it to have a motor, ATTRACTION ("chemistry", "spark", whathaveyou) is the qualifier, the rest is just optional cr@p. This is Ladder Theory, all over again. If the attraction is wild enough, the shopping list goes in the recycle, and the rest of us get to watch the resulting trainwreck. LW's friend found a hot rod, and that's all she cares about.

Maybe when the LW is old enough to drive she'll see the other hand, the one not holding the candy. Not good at judgment, this one.
I'd be wondering which to use on this guy: Hornady Critical Defense, Remington Golden Saber or the Tanto. Don't wanna disturb the neighbors.
As Rom White says, "You cain't fix stupid." People pay him a fortune to say that, so it must be right.

Uh huh. I admire a person who ends an analogy with a double entendre.

First, find out what the guy was convicted of.
Sex offender can mean
1. Child rapist
2. Child molester
3. Child porn enthusiast
4. Person unlucky enough to have personally unknowingly downloaded child porn
5. Person who computer was hacked and used as a terminal for child porn
6. Guy who dated a girl with asshole parents in state with no 'Romeo & Juliette' exemption to statutory rape laws
7. Public urination
8. Guy who was seen naked in his own house by mother illegally trespassing to get her kid to a school bus stop faster
9. Construction worker urinating in a mens bathroom only to have a female child walk in on him and not ever actually see his penis or ass
10. Guy who slams on his brakes to avoid running over a girl jaywalking on a busy street and take her by the hand and walk her off the busy road.
So like I said, find out what he did, it may be nothing.
As a convict with a sex crime it really inst surprising he cant get a job, and therefor cant support his kids.
Now, does your friend have kids? Cuase if he actually is guilty of a real crime it would be a violation of sex registry rules fro him to be near kids. o you could call the cops on him

john's right, 'sex offender' could mean anything (if memory serves, all of the above are real examples of "sex offenders" - yes, the laws are that messed up). But having 3 kids with 3 different women seems like a red flag still.

I forgot to mention the case of the 7 year old boy molested by his 13 year old female babysitter.
The local DA charged the boy with a sex crime.

I'd say go. Get a feeling for the guy. At least that way you can describe him to the PD sketch artist. Yeah I've been there. Being the heavily armed and MMA trained friend/relative there is going to be shit load of this shit in my future too. There is no way to change her mind just be there to pick up the pieces if you want to. Just remember the old adage "The person I help this time will be coming to me for help next time."
"I'd be wondering which to use on this guy: Hornady Critical Defense, Remington Golden Saber or the Tanto. Don't wanna disturb the neighbors" Gold Sabre all the way, 230 grain and rated for the both my 45s. Critical defense 185 grain is nice but not enough punch to cycle the vector. If given the choice between effective and scary and effective I choose scary and effective.

John, those really hit home. My friend B is on the registry and so is my ex-partner D. In B's case, he was sharing a computer with a roommate. When he caught the roommate stealing and hitting on 16 year old girls he kicked him out. Since he was required to give him three days, the friend logged on and loaded the computer down with kiddie porn. A month later (after he ran across state lines) he phones in an anonymous tip and BAM. Five years of court battles later he gets 10 years probation and 10 on the registry.
D was less lucky. He was babysitting our god-daughter at her parent's home. They were letting a mutual friend (read: drug dealing degenerate) live with them. This freak raped our god-daughter. When she screamed, he called D to come check on her. In the meantime, he cleaned himself up and called the cops. While D was trying to change the baby and get her ready to go the hospital, the cops show up. D has blood on him, they arrest him. He never had a chance. He's doing 25-life and the monster who did it is still walking because he turned state's evidence.
TL;DR: We really need legal reform.

Sometimes a big dick is just that. And just from what she wrote, the LW's friend, will (hopefully) find that out soon enough.

There was a recent case in California where a young man looked up sex offenders on the internet and murdered two of them; said he would have killed more if he hadn't been caught.
One of the victims was in his early 20's. His crime? When he was 19 he had sex with his 17 y.o. girlfriend.
